I cannot comment on my understanding of the learning theories without first drawing attention to the concept map as a way of working with new ideas. This exercise enabled me to clarify my metacognition. On the first try, I began the exercise by thinking about four learning theories. However, upon manipulating those ideas through a technology-based concept map, my thinking shifted. I instead focused on the individuals, the theorists. I selected those whose theories matched and flowed with my own understanding. By the end of the process, I recognized that I had created a visualization of my evolution into a social constructivist. As I filled in the boxes associated with “how theory informs instruction,” I noticed how each of these theorists shaped the way I approach my classroom of fifth-grade students. I experience daily the influence of these theories on teaching and learning. Needless to say, my class will be considering how “concept mapping” might help them clarify their thinking in the near future.
