Below we will present our solutions to address these problems.</p><p> </p><p>First, food rescue is crucial. We will collect unsold fresh fruits and vegetables from supermarkets, leftover meals from restaurants, and unopened snacks after events. These items will undergo processing and recycling, then be transferred to people in need—such as low-income groups and the homeless—through donations, low-price sales, or distribution. This approach not only avoids food waste or disposal but also allocates food resources to those in need, achieving the combination of "reducing waste + public welfare support."</p><p> </p><p>Second, we will process wasted food into animal feed through professional treatment and sell it. There are numerous global cases demonstrating this practice. For example, Tanzania-based Afri-eco Feeds, founded by Emanuel Kungu, uses food waste (such as fruit peels and scraps) to produce nutritious animal feed, which is sold to local poultry, pig, and dairy farmers. The company handles up to 50,000 tons of food waste annually, produces approximately 1,000 tons of animal feed, and serves around 2,000 farmers in the Manyara and Arusha regions of Tanzania. Another example is the food scrap processing project by UK supermarkets, Waitrose sorts damaged or leftover food by product type and diverts animal by products into pet food (used in dry and wet food for cats and dogs). Tesco is also exploring upgrading leftover food no longer suitable for human consumption into pet food, with a goal to halve its food waste by 2025. These cases all show that food waste can be turned into resources, through safe treatment to eliminate risks and optimize nutrition, making it meet animal consumption standards.</p><p> </p><p>Third, we will process wasted food into products like fertilizer. Using composting technology, we mix food waste, such as fruit peels, vegetable leaves, and unseasoned leftover rice with straw and dry soil. Professional techniques are applied to produce safe compost, which can reduce the use of chemical synthetic fertilizers, alleviate energy consumption and environmental pressure during their production. Additionally, composting technology has a low threshold, helping lower agricultural costs.</p><p> </p><p>Fourth, we will use anaerobic digestion technology to convert wasted food into biogas for electricity generation. The process involves first sorting and crushing food waste, then allowing microorganisms to decompose it in an oxygen-free environment to produce methane containing biogas. After purification, the biogas is burned to generate electricity. This method reduces greenhouse gas emissions, enables resource recycling, and also produces organic fertilizer.</p>]]></description>

Global Food Waste Crisis</p><p>Globally, approximately 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted annually, accounting for about one - third of the total food produced for human consumption. This not only squanders precious resources such as water, land, and energy invested in food production but also has a significant impact on the environment. When food waste decomposes in landfills, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas with a warming potential 28 times that of carbon dioxide over a 100 - year period.</p><p>2. The Situation in China</p><p>In China, food waste is a notable concern. According to relevant statistics, the amount of food wasted in China each year is as high as 9165 tons. Food waste occurs at various stages of the food supply chain, from agricultural production and processing to distribution and consumption. In the catering industry and at banquets, a large amount of food is often left uneaten. In schools and canteens, students also discard a certain amount of food. This not only causes a huge waste of resources but also increases the burden on the environment, such as the generation of more landfill waste and the consumption of additional energy for waste treatment.</p><p>3. The Situation in South Africa</p><p>South Africa also faces a severe food waste problem. Data shows that South Africa is among the countries with a relatively high level of food waste. In South African schools, the average amount of food waste per capita per meal reaches 107 grams, which is even higher than the household food waste level in the country. The reasons for food waste in South Africa are complex. On one hand, there are inefficiencies in the food supply chain, including problems in food storage, transportation, and distribution, which lead to food spoilage. On the other hand, at the consumption level, consumers' consumption habits and lack of awareness of food conservation also contribute to the waste phenomenon.</p><p>4. Significance of Collaboration between China and South Africa</p><p>Both China and South Africa, as important developing countries, have a responsibility to address the issue of food waste. Collaboration between the two countries can bring multiple benefits:</p><p>	•	Sharing of Experience and Technology: China has made some achievements in the field of food waste reduction, such as promoting the "Clear Your Plate" campaign to raise public awareness of food conservation and developing advanced food waste treatment technologies like composting and anaerobic digestion. South Africa, with its unique advantages in certain aspects of the food industry, can also share its experience in food storage and distribution optimization. By sharing experiences and technologies, the two countries can learn from each other and jointly explore more effective solutions to food waste problems.</p><p>	•	Market Expansion and Economic Benefits: Developing solutions to food waste can also open up new business opportunities. For example, the development of the food waste recycling and reuse industry can create jobs and generate economic benefits.
