These four environmental topics, climate change, plastic use, pollution, fast fashion are very important in my eyes. However, I feel like fast fashion is a topic that gets swept under the rug and does not get enough attention. Fast fashion is defined as inexpensive clothing produced rapidly by mass market retailers in response to the latest trends. Many celebrities day to day show off the latest trends most popular in fashion. By the next week, there is already new trends the celebrities are showing off. Having the million of followers they have, everyone is influenced by these fashion icons and is already searching for the latest that they are wearing. Online website realtors and even stores are already stocked with items like this. The pieces are produced in sweatshops. Sweatshops are defined as a factory or workshop, especially in the clothing industry, where manual workers are employed at very low wages for long hours and under poor conditions. Even though these clothing pieces look great, they were produced in terrible conditions. As a shopper, people look past those working conditions and wages and still opt to buy the cheap clothing items. By the next week, the mall and the online clothing retailers are stocked with the newest and the latest. Kim Kardashian’s fashion trends are one of the more popular trends being copied. She posted on social media a dress made by a very expensive designer and by the next day, Fashion Nova, an online clothing page, had already had the dress made and ready to purchase. This is outrageous and not enough light is shed on it. People when looking at this dress on Fashion Nova does not realize the conditions and fast hours these people in sweatshops took to produce this dress. Kim Kardashian and the designer also were angry because of the dedication and specifics the very expensive dress held, just to get copied under poor conditions for the sake of fast fashion. A new trend will be exposed the very next week and the same thing will happen. Social media stars and celebrities should not be held accountable for starting these fast fashion trends, rather the people buying the pieces. I as a shopper am starting to be more conscious of these trends when shopping and choosing stores that do not promote fast fashion. My friends and I are also always open to share clothes and go through each others closets. My sister and I are also very close in age and share clothes rather than just each of us buying the newest clothes that come and go in fast fashion. This topic doesn’t get talked about enough because the people will buy the clothes they can afford and I cannot blame them because I am accountable for doing the same. But, I can make an effort to stop this and myself and friends to become aware of fast fashion.
