As an upper elementary teacher, I think about vocabulary a lot, as so much of their literacy ties to their familiarity with different words across different contexts. We use Flocabulary, and while I like the engagement piece, I have looked around to see how the words get selected / what the sequence is like and often fall a little short (Stacy).

In grade 4 we have been introducing typing to the students which is a big shift for me at least because I was working with grade 2 where it is more focused on handwriting. Getting the students to place their hands on the correct keys and having them apply what they have learned from the videos has been tricky.

In 2nd grade, students need help adding details to their sentences! Alongside adding detail, basic spelling patterns can be lost over summer too (I think this barrier can partially lead to lack of detail in sentences)

In Grade 2 grammar is a huge skill they need explicit teaching on. Nouns, adjectives and verbs have been a big focus. We don't have a curriculum for this so we have been pulling resources on our own.

In fifth grade, summer learning loss might be using punctuation and capitalization and the idea of organizing ideas into paragraphs

We do a vocab list every two weeks from Flocabulary. The words pop up in novels and curriculum throughout the year

In K we usually start off with the children being able to write what they hear for sounds. Using that “invented” writing stage. By the end of the year it will change with learning blends and digraph sounds with the invented writing skills.
