The purpose of the lottery is to select a scapegoat for ritual sacrifice, which the villagers believe ensures a good harvest and sustains their traditions. The villagers react with a mix of nervousness and complacency, treating it as a routine event. Their reactions reflect blind adherence to tradition, even when it leads to violence.

At the beginning, the townspeople are calm and friendly, engaging in casual conversations. However, as the lottery progresses, tension builds, and their demeanor changes to one of anxiety and detachment. When Tessie Hutchinson is selected, their friendly facade dissolves, and they become unhesitating participants in her stoning. This reveals how societal norms and conformity can suppress empathy, leading people to commit atrocities in the name of tradition or communal pressure.

Jackson uses a sunny, peaceful setting to create an ironic contrast with the dark conclusion. The cheerful atmosphere, combined with mundane details about the villagers’ daily lives, lulls readers into a false sense of security. Subtle hints, such as the children gathering stones and the villagers' uneasy behavior, build suspense and foreshadow the violent twist, emphasizing the horror of the lottery’s true purpose.

It shows that it doesn't matter how good you are if you did something wrong, you will be tag as bad in the society.

Shirley Jackson did great on the lottery settings, as he hides the dark intention in a peaceful way. He also did great as he layouts the setting of the story same as the lottery box. The village itself is a lottery box with the people inside of it.
