We also know that the boy's parents are in fact alive and living with him. This indicates that the boy has a relationship with both his parents and grandma, but his relationship with his grandma is stronger.

On page 5 the book wrote, "They thought I was a cool kid. But that was only on the outside. They didn't really know me". From this, we can infer that the boy has some insecurities or feelings that would be labeled as "uncool". The boy started the book by talking about his positive characteristics and talents but then said he wasn't cool on the inside. This indicates there is something going on with his feelings/thoughts.
