It’s been a long hard goodbye, About 5:00 I played “ jesu joy of mans’ desire…” on my beautiful little 00 size Martin guitar, thinking about that first Martin Alan bought for me; a 00-18 for $150. From a broke student at UCSD. He wrote “A good payment record by 🤬!” On the piece of paper we used to keep track of me paying him back. I can still see it. He always asked me to play “jesu” when I had a guitar in focus in his vicinity, so I did. We spent an afternoon at the street table in front of the Astoria Bistro talking about all sorts of things - philosophy, care, teaching, change, delusion, hope, and the unexpected -  these were all things I remember coming up from that conversation. I also remember how I admired and enjoyed the treatment he gave to the ideas we discussed, both with his experiences and reminiscences illuminating them, and his sentiments around them. I remember looking over at him towards the end of our time that day, and noticing how the lovely late afternoon sun seemed to lift up the spirit of reflection coming from his eyes and his countenance. It was a warmth and glow, dimming but still carrying the arc and light of a fine day.

This, it seemed to me then and seems to me now, was a reflection of the life he had lived and the model that he inspires for so many of us. He was a man who had an impact on so many, both recognized and not, and in so many ways. Even people he never met are the better for encountering those who had encountered him. It has been a life worth living. Alan has been an inspiration then and now, and his presence in ours is something to be thankful for.

He made me laugh and we cried together. I know my dad, Eugene Itzen, would say he has lost a great co.worker and friend. 
During a counselling session, he had me shut my eyes and hold a needle from thread for about 30 seconds. When I opened my eyes, I asked why did you have me do that? He laughed and said, just because. We laughed. Great smile and loved his voice.
