The author draws you in immediately just with the first sentence: "Pa was taking too long to cut the boy's throats." I think this because the book seems to be building a strong connection between Tavin and Jasimir. This is evident on page 88 where Tavin makes a passive aggressive comment toward Fie, telling her she would be sorry if anything were to happen to his prince.
