Focus on removing barriers

I think this very intentional focus on forseeing & removing barriers is key bc a project can have a beautiful, resaarch-based design, but it won't matter if the barriers aren't addressed.

I think there may be something to unpack and leverage around the "teaching" of competencies happening in both these OST and dual enrollment contexts. Is there a way to understand how to cultivate and scale these assets in the work to imagine a new professional corps of instructors who are trained and recruited outside of the traditional "boxes" or create a new identity?

Naming the Challenge of Staff Capacity

In both projects I appreciate calling out staff capacity challenges for effective implementation. In general for our "blur" work we could probably start developing a strong staffing POV on what it takes to do this work well.

It says "write 'something incredible'" and so I did.

Seriously these projects are great because they don't start with a small pilot but rather with substantial reach-- so I'd put them in the "we deliver...."

removing barriers for learners

I think EIRs help push the national thinking on learner access to credentials and postsecondary education. I like the move to the Community Colleges to streamline administrative burdens and hopefully increase access even more. I wonder if there is also an opportunity to embed intentional work around transcription in the spirit of removing barriers.

Improving the model

I'm not exactly sure where it fits in the TOC, but I appreciate the focus in the EIR work on continuously refining the model to make it work better.

Utilize the evaluation of these projects to help us understand how these strategies work, under what circumstances and for which segments of students? And perhaps developing a "playbook" to help us and our partners implement these strategies.

CBO capacity

With CBOs like BGCA as often the entry point for learners, I think we have a lot of potential to help them develop high-quality workforce development supports to their learners/members - so many are trying to build this from scratch without knowing where and how to get started.

Our internal silos

I'd love to lift up shared themes and tools from projects and make them available to all so we don't reinvent the wheel and we take advantage of what's working well in 1 project can be adapted or reused for another project.

Evaluation

Love to see more embedded evaluation so we can learn what is working, for whom, under what conditions. This builds the evidence (and the will) for scaling, resource allocation, improvements etc.

leveraging assets

The other asset to look at here are the relationships that have been built in these localities. Might we think about building on the work on one thing (e.g. dual enrollment project) to engage those audiences in something deeper/broader -- like in those same comm colleges that are engaged in WBL for the dual enrollment students, engaging them in expanding their approach to WBL to reach all students? And/or engaging the employers working on this initiative in a broader regional career pathway/regional Econ dev approach (beyond the Ed Practice now, I realize)

Are school systems the right place for innovation? (Jerre)

I'm increasingly pessimisstic that school systems can innovate - not out of a lack of desire to do things better but more a lack of capacity to solve for so many societal challenges at once in a highly politicized environment. So, I am more and more attracted to the idea that we need to inform and empower organizations at the margins of the systems. BCGA is a really interesting example of such an organization. Perhaps our role as a leader is to better define what different institutions and organizations should be doing (and not doing) so that we reduce some of the asks on the education system and put those asks onto other partners.
