Narrated by Death, The Book Thief is the story of Liesel Meminger, a nine-year-old German girl who was given up by her mother to live with Hans and Rosa Hubermann in the small town of Molching in 1939, shortly before World War 2. On their way to Molchin, Liesel's younger brother, Wener, dies, leaving Liesel with no family. Hans is a gentle man who brings her comfort and helps her learn to read, starting with a book Liesel took from the cemetery where her brother was buried. Liesel befriends a neighborhood boy, Rudy Steiner. At a book burning, She is seen stealing a book from the burning by the mayor's wife, who later invites Liesel to read in her library. Hans is reminded of a favor he owes, and agrees to hide a Jew named Max Vandenberg in his basement. Max writes stories for Liesel to read, and she and Max quickly become friends.

Why I Loved this Book

This book has a different narration than any that I have experienced before; the narrator is Death himself. I find this interesting because there was a lot of death during World War 2, and having Death personified really opens up a new perspective on the story and the characters as well.
