With input from 3rd grade team, developed a challenge to encourage families to engage in the At-Home activities included on the Family Math pages. Families will send in evidence of participation, top 3 students in each classroom will earn an extra recess w/ me.

SBAC Math parent night

On April 11, I will hold an SBAC information night focused on the Math portion of the tests for grades 3-5. Intention: inform parents/guardians of the rigor & depth of the questions students experience on the state tests. I will have a couple of problems that I have parents/guardians try to work on themselves, inform them of resources for families that they can check out, stress the importance of attendance & adequate sleep during testing weeks, etc.

Schoolwide Fluency

Survey teachers to see if we can purchase Apply books for next year? I have many teachers being reprimanded about prints but want to assign the practice and partner pages.

Also, helping LMT organize extra math materials into my office to be able to supply teachers with manipulatives/materials/resources quickly.

This role is allowing me to develop a community of math learners. As teachers we can usually do the math, but do we always understand why we are doing it (why/how it works as we teach)? Entering this space is not easy, and requires determined efforts to build trusted spaces to learn. To emphasize the importance of the math community that I am building, I asked my teachers what they would like to see as OUR end of the year goals for this role at Summerwind Trails.

First Grade

One first grade teacher is experiencing the most ideal application of EQUIP. All the lessons have been taught before the necessary dates. This was possible due to the small groups of students needing lessons. In doing this work together, the teacher and I both noticed that the students could repeat these activities with ease-- "they can teach a classmate." I can even see how the activities from the lessons could be repeated on a regular basis for fluency outside of the math block, or as an activity for early finishers.

Hannah goal-- continue to find how our resources make a lighter load on this journey. Prioritize counting collections.

Second Grade

A second grade teacher said, “A leader is guiding us through doing the assessments together and that is essential.”

After a few different iterations, my Kinder team & I finally landed on a recording checklist that makes their anecdotal assessment recordings as easy as possible on a day to day basis. I will create this for Module 6 next, and then go back & work on Mods 1-4 for next year.

I plan to facilitate 3 separate EM2 Family Info Nights: K-1, 2-3, and 4-5 in the first few weeks of school. Purpose: inform families about the format, rigor, expectations, and resources from EM2. Families will be asked to engage in math activities to give them a clear picture of how math is being taught.

As I conclude our first State of The Math Union, my resolve to build and promote a math culture based in Eureka Squared is strengthened each and every day with the teachers, students, staff and families at Summerwind Trails.

GOAL: Pre-Module Deep Dives

I would like to try & schedule some days for each level to do a real deep dive into their Modules before they actually teach them. Possibly a half-day where we are deeply study & intentionally plan out a module. For the appropriate modules, we could also set up plans for administering & responding to EQUIP assessments (which are currently not utilized much as my site).

One of my end-of-year goals is to co-plan/ co-teach a topic with each grade level. My plan is to use backward mapping and curriculum data to customize lessons and make intentional choices about which Fluency and Learn activities to prioritize.

Progress: I planned Module 5: Topic A with my fourth grade team this week. We will co-teach the topic next week. I will co-teach one lesson from Topic A with each teacher. Teachers will teach the Fluency and Launch components, I will teach the Learn component, and we will “land” the lesson together.

My second goal is to lead a choral count in third-fifth grade classes to reinforce multiplication concepts. I led a choral count activity in fourth grade classes this week, and I’m scheduled to do the same in third grade classes next week.

As I am the newest member of this team, I have been given an awesome opportunity to go into a very inviting school with a LOT of support from Dana, Jill and my other math teacher team members.

I think it is important to keep your admin in the loop with all of the big and little things we do in this position. So every week, I meet with my admin to share all of the tasks I have accomplished for the week in the form of a slideshow. Doing this discipline each week has helped to keep me on task and do more intentional planning with my teachers. In each slideshow I additionally link all of my meeting agendas for the week so my admin can see what was discussed at each grade level meeting.

In addition, I have been using backwards assessment planning using the end of module assessment to help teachers intentionally plan for lessons. This way the focus of the module is in the forefront of their minds during instructions.
