Writing these things out really helped me think about the big picture and refocus back on what is so important for our students. Sometimes we get so caught up in the curriculum, data, lesson planing, etc. That we forget what really matters. I want my students to remember the way I made them feel and the little things that had a BIG impact! (I also hope they organize their speech slightly better than I just did!!)

As I was answering the questions it made me realize that when we break it down most teachers want the same things for their students. I doesn't matter if we teach early childhood high school or somewhere in between; we want our students to know we care about them, that they feel safe, and maybe learn something along the way. When my students think back on my class I want them to think, "Ms. Petersen listened, cared about me, and understood what I needed."

After making my list of hopes and trying to establish which ones are currently most important to me, I realized that the majority of them center around how my students view their learning environment and building classroom community. Making sure my students feel safe, valued, supported, and respected is crucial to me, especially as an elementary teacher. I also put a strong emphasis on maintaining solid relationships with each of my students. Years from now, I want them to remember my classroom as a place they loved coming to each morning because it made them feel good to be there. I hope my students remember me as someone who cared about them, had a good sense of humor, and worked hard to help them be the best versions of themselves. Sometimes students forget their elementary teachers once they graduate, but I want them to fondly remember being a student in my class.

My reflection on this activity concluded that when it comes down to it, my hopes weren't centered on their ability to complete grade level activities. Instead, I had starred hopes about student emotional well-being. I wanted them to have strong character building traits to be life long learners, and have skills instilled that would benefit them beyond their school years. My retirement would be represented with students and/or faculty that felt I made an impact on who they were as a person and the growth they had working together with me. It's easy to get caught up in assessments, data driven instruction, SLOs, and etc. When truly I am trying harder every day to develop all around, honest, empathetic learners with integrity.

Narrowing it down to a couple favorites was challenging for me. I hope that I can accomplish all 10 at some point in my career. I think most importantly, I hope that each and every student that steps foot into my classroom knows they are loved. I want students to feel safe being themselves, and know that at least one person in this big world cares deeply for them. This activity really helped remind me of those core reasons why I chose to become a teacher.

This activity helped me realize that my contribution in the classroom goes far behind simply teaching Language Arts. I hope my students say that the conversations we had, the mistakes we made together, and the laughter we shared allowed them to better prepare to become world changers. As educators, we tend to focus on the day to day struggles and victories that happen in the classroom. Did my students understand the lesson? Are my students going to be prepared for the MCA or MAP test? Did I get through all of the content that I was supposed to today? Although these questions are important they don’t really allow us to see the big picture. I hope this activity helps me to ask more “big picture” questions. Am I preparing my students to make good decisions? Am I creating an environment that allows my students to feel safe and comfortable to have real conversations? Do my students feel as though they can safely make mistakes? These are the questions that really matter! The recurring words that kept coming up as I worked through my list were hope, inspiration, growth, togetherness, and grit. I hope I instill these values in my students each and every day.

It was challenging to narrow my list down. This activity was a good reminder of what is really important when it comes to teaching, and how much of an impact we are capable of having on our students. Thinking about my retirement and who I wanted to speak, my answer was instantly one of my students. I teach reading and math intervention and my students struggle. My goal is for my students to gain confidence in themselves and leave my room each day knowing that they can do hard things. I think it is so easy to get caught up in data, assessments, and test scores. This activity was a good reminder of what is truly important.

I don’t often take time to reflect on these kinds of questions and think about them, however, this assignment reminded me why it is so important. It is important for teachers to reflect on questions like these so we are able to get a good idea of why we teach and what we would like our students to get out of our teaching in our classroom. I do believe that academics are pertinent, however, in my opinion relationships with my students are even more important to me. This assignment was a great reminder of that.

Reading the description of this assignments, I thought it was going to be difficult to come up with 10 hopes. Once I got started though I noticed I had so many hopes that I had to pick and choose which could fit in the 10 and which should be knocked out. I am not one who usually dreams about the future, I am a pretty easy going, go with the flow kind of person so it was interesting to see what my subconscious aspirations were. The most important ones weren't my personal accomplishments but rather how I will be impacting my students. Not only being a positive influence for my students but shifting the mindset that PE is just about "rolling out the dodge balls" and showing those around me that its much more. I enjoyed learning a little bit about myself and my goals through this assignment.

I noticed a lot throughout the assignment that I referred to the love of movement and helping students find the enjoyment and purpose of moving. I hope that students know this is not old school PE and just to learn sports. It is about creating healthy habits and skills to last a lifetime!

This was very refreshing to sit down and list 10 hopes that I have as a teacher. It brought me back to why I wanted to become a teacher! After ten years of teaching you can sometimes lose sight of the WHY you are a teacher. Although I do my best to stop and remind myself of what I want students to remember , it can be tough sometimes when the to-do list of things that need to get done, the meetings all of the time, the grades that need to be inputted, the behavior issues to deal with, etc. When it comes down to my hope as a teacher of what my students will remember about me is the way that I made them feel. My hope is that the students will remember that they felt safe, comfortable and loved during the time that they were a part of our classroom family! :)

We get caught up in the day to day routine of life and forget about what we set out to do in the field of teaching. Taking a step back to remind myself of these 10 very important reasons was very enlightening. Refocusing our purposes in life as well as in our job is a very important thing to do from time to time. This assignment helped me realize why I started this journey of becoming a teacher in the first place.

I know I had a lot of good teachers throughout my years in school but I really remember the ones who taught things that were beneficial in real life and applied to everyone.

I loved this assignment. It is very easy to get caught up in the HUGE list of to-do's that we have each day. We sometimes forget what our purpose is for teaching. I would say it was very easy coming up with my 10 hopes I have as a teacher - what was the hardest is selecting on 3 that were most important to me. Scripting a speech that I want my students to say about me was pretty interesting. It was a little challenging to not repeat the same words, but to come up with some more sentences about what I want my legacy to be. I would say the biggest things that kept repeating throughout all of these steps is: I want my students to know that I was welcoming, positive, loving and always willing to go the extra mile to support their needs.

It was extremely challenging to narrow it down to the top three. During this process, I thought about the teachers who made an impact in my life. What was the impact and why did that stand out? This week I have been working with my students on their memory books. This has been challenging doing it from a distance. It has been fun to see what they have written about me. Have I made an impact on them? I wanted all of my students to know that I loved them and I wanted them to develop a love for learning.

Each item had a common theme of helping and inspiring students in some way. When making my list I thought of my school career and my likes, dislikes and what my teachers did to help me be successful. All of these ideas went into my list.
Everyone has that "one teacher" that believed in them and I hope that I can be that teacher to my students. Believing in each and every student is my top importance. Having a teacher believe in me made all the difference.

When I was thinking of how I wanted to be remembered as a teacher, I thought about how I remember my teachers who made the biggest impact on my life. I remember them as being kind, caring about me as a person not just as a learner, forgiving, and made learning exciting. Those are the teachers who made me want to also become a teacher, because they made such an impact on my life. I also hope to be that for my students. I want to be the reason a student enjoyed coming to school, decided to become a teacher, or wanted to keep pushing themselves in school. That is the ultimate goal for a lot of us teachers I think. We want to make a life-long difference in their lives and be that person that always had their back!

When I think about some of my core values as a teacher, they don't have much to do with reading, writing, or spelling. I want my fourth graders to chase after their dreams, leave things better than they found them, and know that THEY matter. I want them to have established positive life skills and habits that will allow them to achieve whatever and wherever their future takes them. I have had many discussions with my fourth graders that center around kindness, grace, and love. We have had many conversations about what type of people they want to surround themselves with, and then turn that into trying to get them to be the type of person that they'd want to surround THEMSELVES with. I hope those meaningful discussions are what my students remember about their fourth grade ELA teacher, Miss Limberg: She truly helped me be a better person.

The top 3 hopes I have as a teacher is that my students learn academics from me, they learn life lessons from me, and I create positive relationships with my students throughout the years. I want my students to know that I care about them and that they make a difference in my life too. I hope that my colleagues know that I value their hard work and dedication to our students and that they know that they are in important piece of the puzzle in many students' lives. I hope that others see that I strive to make relationships with students, work hard to do what is right, and never give up even when things get hard.

This exercise made me emotional! I am only in my 2nd year of teaching but I've already determined was is most important to me (at least for right now). The top 3 hopes I have as a teacher is that my kiddos would find Joy, Safety, and Love in my classroom. I would hope that in 15 years, this is what they would say about me, too. Academics are important and I hold my kids to high standards. However, these kids will be judged the rest of their lives in relationships and jobs. It's my job to provide a safe, loving, and joyful place for them to spend a year of their schooling. Academics will come. Character development is forever. I would hope that a former student or colleague of mine would say something about how I shaped people, not just brains.

Most teachers choose the profession because they either love kids or love their subject. Some love both but we almost always love one more than another. I love my students. As a music teacher it is my hope that I can use music to draw students in, give them a sense of belonging, and help them grow as a person. It is always my top priority to know each of my students personally, especially in my senior high choir, where students are only there because they want to be. I hope this passion for my students is transparent to my students and they know how much I care about them.

This assignment made me reflect on my past 17 years. My top 3 hopes would be, make a difference, build positive relationships with my kids and to have every student have an enjoyable experience in my gymnasium. It is funny about the question of 15 years from now, what would students say.......... Yesterday, I went golfing for the first time in 15 years or so. I ran into two former students from one of my first years teaching. I knew them right away and they remembered me. We talked for a few minutes but they said I was a cool teacher. I guess that is what I would want kids to remember about my class, they have a pretty cool teacher. The more they like the instructor, the better the experience they will have. I would like former students and colleagues to speak at my retirement party. Those that would come and speak are the ones that you really made a difference in their lives and it would be cool to hear how I made an impact in their lives.
