when handling you need focus on building a positive relationship with your animal, use gentle consistent handling techniques to make them feel comfortable and secure, this could be including treats, praiseing and calm body language. for obedience you need to teach basic commands such as sit, stay and come. use positive reinforcement methods, rewarding your animal for the commands, consistenty is key so practice commands regularly. for specific objectives you need to identify clear goals first your training, for example i was training winnie the goat and a specific objective could be to have her respond to the stay command 70% of the time within a month. I would break down the objective into smaller steps and track the progress to ensure i’m on the right path and i can make sure winnie isn’t stressed.

It’s important to monitor the animals mental and physical state during training and adjust the programme accordingly to ensure the animals well being. This incudes observing their behaviour, mood and any signs or stress or discomfort. If the animal is showing the signs then a different method needs to be used and then the new method needs to be monitored aswell to make sure it is safe and appropriate for the animal. This could involve reducing the intensity of the task, the duration, or type of training exercise or providing additional breaks. By continuously monitoring and adaptating the training programme, we can ensure the animals well-being is prioritised and that the training process is both effective and ethical. Winnie would not respond to the clicker so we used a different method such as hand commands and vocal commands which worked better.

You handle the animals gently and with care to make them feel safe and keep them from harm. You should always treat the animal with kindness and avoid harsh or forceful methods and always support all limbs . use positive reinforcement when handling the animals e.g. praising and giving treats. provide breaks in between handling to prevent stress and you should always recognise when the animal is becoming stressed. always make sure to ask a qualified trainer or veterinarian if you are unsure. I also handled winnie to move her to the correct area to train her. i used this method as it is good for her health and welfare. This is because it doesn’t injure her and we have full control over her.

It is important to have the correct temperature and uv strength in the enclosure and bearded dragons need it to be 38-42 degrees on the hot side and 28-32 on the cold side and the uv needs to be the right strength to prevent metabolic bone disease. I also maintained the vents by wiping them clean and nothing else needing maintain.

I am currently competent at taking snail eggs out and putting them in freezer, my areas for development are making sure i can do the stick insects full clean in the lesson time. I can do this buy speaking to the teacher about how i could do them quicker and come up with a plan, it is important to have them done quick so i can get on with other jobs. This is a picture of me feeding the animals. I identified this by speaking to ayesha and other tutors about what i struggle with during lessons and how to complete tasks quicker.

Prior to handling, I assessed the temperament of the bearded dragon. I monitored for any signs of distress such as excessive movement, head bobbing and a dark 'beard'. Due to the bearded dragon being calm , I decided to approach her with a loose grip. Her chest was supported by my hand, my fingers were in a 'V' shape on either side of her neck with her back and tail supported with my wrist and forearm. I made sure that I did not injure her by potentially bending her tail or dropping her if she did become skittish, one way this was prevented was by keeping my hand close to the table and having my other hand empty incase i needed to change restraint. I continued to monitor her behaviour throughout the time I was handling/restraining her, no negative behaviours were present therefore I did not need to adapt the method of restraint that I had chose.

Instead of the prior restraint method, I attempted the 'burrito method' this was done by placing the bearded dragon on the towel and draping the ends over him, he responded positively to this method.

To begin with, I used Safe4 disinfectant to clean the area prior to handling and restraining the bearded dragon this is to prevent her getting ill from any germs/bacteria's that may be present and dangerous to her. I used a holding box to help move her from her enclosure to the desk to ensure she could not escape while I was transferring her. While restraining and handling the bearded dragon, I decided to use a towel to provide the bearded dragon with something to grip on when they are on the table so that they don't slip and injure themselves. I also used the towel as it allowed us to use a different method of restraint called the burrito method - this is when we drape the towel over the bearded dragons back, we typically use this method when an animal is more wriggly because it provides more support and can often reduce stress and anxiety in the animal which means that they relax and become less fidgety.

We must closely follow the Animal Welfare Act 2006 this ensures the bearded dragon are being handled humanely and are not being caused unnecessary suffering for example incorrectly using the equipment we have selected.

When handling/walking Winnie the pygmy goat, we use lead ropes. All the lead ropes have a name tag to tell me which lead rope is for which animal this helps ensure we are using the correct equipment for the animal. Prior to using them, I check for any thinning of the rope this is so I can prevent it snapping and Winnie running off . I also check for any tangles as this can put pressure on winnie’s neck/throat and cause her discomfort. Once I have finished using the lead rope, I check for any damages. If there is no damage I wrap it up and hang it up in the brick shed.
