As expected, when researching the western music canon, there are predominately the 'classic' pieces being performed by symphonies across America. The music canon primarily focuses on pieces written by the famous composers such as Mahler, Bernstein, and Beethoven. Most, if not all of these pieces are considered classic music, comprising of the common string orchestra as well as brass and woodwind instruments. As for music that is left out, there doesn't seem to be much jazz, pop, or soul music present at these concerts. As far as these orchestras innovating, they seem to have a few tactics to do so. Multiple symphonies offer activities and events for children and young adults to participate in, and encourage the music scene within today's youth. They also play music scores of very famous movies and stories such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Harry Potter, and other series that have a rather interesting score. I would like see more eccentric pieces being played. Also, I see myself in the music being played because I grew up listening to that music and i find it interesting.

"As Marsalis sees it, jazz is America’s classical music, and so writing concertos and symphonies represents no contradiction. But it’s that very idea – that jazz can operate under the terms set by classical music – that continues to be divisive."- The Guardian
