Our common theme regarding the Lasallian charism is how we see the mutual collaborative support among our educator colleagues in a sense of community.

Visit to Khan's AP PreCalculus Class

Ms. Khan creates a warm, relational learning environment from the moment students enter the room, welcoming them by name. This sense of community extended to the learning process of the lesson when students have completed a warm up and then turn to discuss points of understanding and confusion. Ms. Khan made excellent use of a document camera to model problem solving while engaging students to share different reasoning strategies. The outcome I witnessed was students helping each other with reasoning and compassion in the context of frustration, confusion, and anxiety to come through the lesson with solid, integrated understanding of key concepts. Ms. Khan modeled quality education and inclusive community through active learning with full participation, emphasizing the value of different reasoning processes in mathematical problem solving. I have already been trying to incorporate her techniques for active learning through discussion, emphasizing the value of different reasoning processes. I am also considering how to use a document camera to model writing and to enhance discussion, perhaps to demonstrate annotations for deeper analysis in reading a text passage.

Visit to Dr. Tierney 's senior Lit class

Dr. Tierney created an engaging and supportive classroom environment by beginning class with a meaningful prayer that connected students to the current lesson, events happening in school, and reminded them that they are role models for younger students. She clearly explained the assigned work, answered questions, and reminded students about the support available to help them succeed. She established strong instructional strategies by setting clear expectations, introducing the lesson with a hook about the writer, and encouraging curiosity before students began reading. Students participated in pair-share discussions where they shared what they knew and did not know, then discussed their ideas with the whole class. After reading a short paragraph, students made connections and predictions before transitioning into a personal writing activity using the prompt, “When I was six, my ______ taught me.” She built strong relationships with students by sharing her own personal story and memory, modeling vulnerability and engagement in the learning process. She also used effective feedback strategies throughout the lesson by clarifying expectations, reminding students to include details in their writing, and modeling a strong response by writing and explaining her own example for the class. The lesson was highly engaging, organized, and supportive, with students clearly understanding both the purpose of the activity and the expectations for success.
