This is a bacterial disease in livestock where bacteria enters the tissue. It is mostly when there is an injury or when wet skin is present. Odor and swelling of feet are common symptoms. Treatment includes foot/hoof trimming, antibiotics, and footbaths.

Anthrax is a bacterial disease caused by the spore-producing bacterium, Bacillus anthracis. It is zoonotic which means can be transmitted to humans and animals. Anthrax is highly contagious, it can live in soil up to 50 years, and cases should be reported immediately. Symptoms include change in normal appearance and can cause sudden death. Can be prevented and treated but it´s still very deadly.

In our region the most common bacterial disease is lyme disease caused by ticks. The ticks normally affect cattle and horses. Females are higher than the males infestation. The ticks target the blood stream of these animals. These ticks can cause weight gain, affect milk production, skin irritation, and transmit other diseases from the ticks. More symptoms are low grade fever, swollen joints, muscle tenderness, and interior uveitis. To prevent these diseases keep down the tall grass and limit weeds and the pastures mowed.

These birds can introduce germs and diseases to your flock. Secure feed bins and water to prevent wildlife contamination.
