Malaysia is a collective of collectives. The underground music scene in Malaysia is an example of the amalgamation of different communities who collectively enjoy and perform specific sub-genres of music such as math rock. Frequently used musical elements in math rock encompass polyrhythmic textures, irregular time signatures, improvisation, dissonance, complex song structures, and a free-form approach to musical composition, which are all considerably more distinct from the conventions of traditional rock music (Sounds of Life, 2023). In the Malaysian underground scene, bands like Dirgahayu and Mutesite are known for their traditional math rock sound, however for my field project I decided to interview a band in the scene who have their own unique sound and yet still represents the significant features of math rock interpreted in their own individualistic style.

The Filters went on to record and mix various covers, notably their cover of ‘Pagi Yang Gelap” by the band Hujan. It was recorded and mixed for one of Aiman's college assignments, aiming to make this cover as unique as possible without straying too far from the original. Aiman is on vocals for this track – a rare and special occasion. Apparently, there are a few older covers hidden in their archives, but this particular cover survived the culling as they liked the way their arrangement and rendition turned out, which also received recognition from the band Hujan itself as well as their frontman, Noh Salleh.

The track ‘Cervidae’, being the one of the earlier original releases was seen as the part of the band’s musical journey of finding their math rock sound and experimenting with it to make it have more of a unique identity attributable to The Filters (Ting, 2022). On ‘Cervidae’, the challenge of being loyal to oneself in a social hierarchy using symbolic images is highlighted in the lyrics; “not dead but you’re not who you are / you run like a deer in the dark / so afraid of what’ll rip you apart”. Ian’s lyrics style is full of vague yet understandable analogies, and in some cases like in ‘Cervidae’, the lyrics can be interpreted in various ways by the listener. The instrumentation is unique, with lots of reverb on the vocals as well as distorted, droning, high-pitched and sustained guitar effects. The beginning section of the song uses the sounds of computer keyboards in place of the hi-hats and blends into the actual drum hi-hat during the end of the pre-chorus. This track also showcases what they wanted to artistically express in the years working on the album as it wasn’t the first written song, but was still created about 5 years before the release.

While ‘Cervidae’ starts with a fast tempo, ‘BZD’ starts slow and sets the mood before speeding up and slowing down again, with beautiful chord progressions that can be heard carrying the arrangement throughout the track. The song was recorded in a toilet to achieve the layers of echo and reverb in the track, creating an almost ethereal effect (Ting, 2022). In true style of The Filters, the track also has an instrumental bridge section leading to a breakdown that differs from the main motif of the track but blends well in the arrangement. The song ends with another instrumental breakdown filled to the brim with a faster tempo, thick dynamics, notes and chords that really tug at the heartstrings due to the use of minor chords and modal interchanges before gradually ending the song to a more minimal instrumentation and slower tempo, using the lyrics “concrete sighs / as I hit the ground”. The title ‘BZD’ is the abbreviation for benzodiazepines, a common antidepressant, with depressing and subtle lyrics hinting at a toxic relationship and suicidal ideation – or at least that’s how I interpret it. This track was the last song written for the ‘Exhaler’ album and is the closest to what The Filters see as their most updated version of their sound as a band currently among their first release and have since expanded on that as the continue to mature and grow in their musicianship.

The Filters are a fourpiece band from Kuala Lumpur who categorise their sound as ‘fractional math rock’, viewing fractions as “the easiest form of math” on account of their intention to make math rock more engaging for average listeners (NME, 2022). During my interview with Ian Khoo, the frontman and guitarist for the band, he explains that math rock in general has a sense of disconnect with the audience due to many of its tracks being instrumental, naturally longer in structure, and technical complexity that audiences would be more preoccupied with analysing. Their goal with fractional math rock was to retain the complexity and density of math rock, but to also “put a face on it that people can recognise” and create a more accessible experience.

In 2013 during their time as a threepiece, they had already begun writing some of the songs now featured in their 2021 album ‘Exhaler’, their first album created seemingly by accident as the band worked together with their newest addition Chan to the group and had composed, arranged, and recorded about 6 tracks before realising they only needed one more to complete the album. After almost 8 years of reworking, remixing, and perfecting the tracks while also performing them at various venues for gigs, the band decided in 2021 to finally release the album. This longer than usual duration is due to the fact that they were self-learning the necessary skills as they made the album, being in charge of every aspect leading up to the actual distribution and publishing – which was later entrusted to talent management company TongTongAsia. The final album consists of 7 songs averaging at around 6 minutes each, riddled with fatalistic reflections and themes centred around “themes of hedonism, excess, loss, struggling with self-identity, coming to terms with your identity and your place within existence, indignation” (NME, 2022). There is a strong impression that The Filters are letting go of their worst experiences.

It can be said that there were a multitude of hurdles they had to jump over to get this album officially launched into the public; such as making physical CD copies, merchandise and digitising the album as they uploaded it to Spotify in 2022. They also obtained a grant from CENDANA to support the album launch and sales, however disaster had struck during this crucial time of their album launch – Aiman had gotten into a terrible motorcycle accident and lost function in his right hand. This meant the possibility of holding off all shows and gigs until he was fully recovered and is able to play again. They were prepared to wait for him for a year, however through his bandmates’ support and his own sheer determination and perseverance, Aiman managed to learn how to play the drums with one hand and managed to fully regain function in his right hand after just a month. The Filters have been performing for many more shows since, even though releasing the album was intended to be the closing of a chapter of their lives, as the band had played these songs for years before officially releasing it. More people were just discovering them and their fanbase grew, demanding more shows from them to keep the momentum that they had going.

They have also been working on the songs for their second album, referred to in our interview as ‘album 2’, and has been foreshadowed to be a newer, more vibrant, and colourful sound for The Filters as compared to ‘Exhaler’. Ian believes that challenging themselves to make newer and more different music is what will help the band grow. This can be seen in the two songs from the new album titled “Lymph” and “Sea Side Serenade” that they’ve performed on various live shows such as the Audiotree Worldwide session in 2021 that garnered them significant international attention and supporters. Ian also mentioned a conversation with Reuben about the new album and they both agreed that the band has discovered their new sound identity and are collectively excited for the release, whenever that will be.

Personally, I think what makes The Filters’ work special is their tenacity and deep passion for creating music, especially with the intentions behind their creations. It takes a lot of determination, patience and bravery to make an album for almost 10 years and it shows in the quality of the final product how much thought and care went into the project. As someone who was a fan before I was their friend, it’s safe to say their goal of touching the heart of just one person has been fulfilled. If I myself have been personally impacted by this band’s music in such a visceral way, I wonder if others with preferences like me have experienced a similar thing. They have influenced so many young and upcoming bands to further explore their own individuality and experiment with things they never thought of but found inspiration in The Filters’ music. I believe that when you are as passionate and motivated behind the clear goal and narrative you want to portray in a song or album, the results are special and will speak for itself in terms of reception from the intended audience.

I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment that the Malaysian music scene in general, not limited to just math rock or the underground, is in a state of “every-man-for-themselves”. This is why Jenn Thompson’s ideology of the sinking ship referenced in the interview resonates so well with a lot of artists in the scene who want to see a better future for the Malaysian music industry and for more recognition of our diverse and rich music culture. If we don’t work together to push Malaysian music to the map as a collective, how will we ever stop the ship from sinking? The hesitation from artists contributing to the downfall of this logic can be attributed to how fickle pursuing a music career in this country can be due to the general public’s perception of musicians and art as a non-essential to the human race, when in fact it is the very essence of culture. Ian’s sentiment of influencing the change for this mindset through education seems to be the most plausible yet slowest way to do so, though I can’t be too sure how much this can truly affect us in this rapidly changing world.

I think The Filters are significant to Malaysia's music industry as they operate with the idea of not only artistic expression but also inspiring other musicians to create their own pieces of art and sharing their resources to help support budding musicians such as using their recording studio, Chap Fan Records, to help a new band record and mix their first single and enriching the ordeal with their own knowledge and experiences. I believe that if all Malaysian artists were to operate this way, we would see a significant change in our industry and collectively reap the benefits from said positive changes, such as putting our music on the global map.

In conclusion, I learned that it’s not impossible to create art and express yourself, to be unique but also belonging to a collective, and to succeed as an individual while also supporting a community. I hope The Filters continue making music and I’m truly excited to be a part of the rest of their journey.
