    • Caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain that affects a person’s ability to control their muscles
  • The brain damage that leads to CP can happen before birth, during birth, within a month of birth or during the first years of a child’s life
  • Cerebral: having to do with the brain
  • Palsy: weakness or trouble using the muscles

    4 types:
    1.     Spastic Cerebral Palsy: most common, 80% of people with CP
    increased muscle tone so their muscles are stiff and their movements may be awkward
    • Spastic diplgia/diparesis: mainly in legs, may cause difficulty walking because tight hip and leg muscles cause their legs to pull together so they turn inward and cross at the knees (called scissoring)
    • Spastic hemiplegia/hemiparesis: affects only one side of a persons body, usually the arm is more affected by the leg 
    • Spastic quadriplegia/quadriparesis: most severe form of spastic CP. Affects all four limbs, the trunk and the face. People with this form usually can’t walk and often have other developmental disabilities 
    2.     Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy: trouble control movements in arms, hands, feet and legs which makes it hard to walk and sit. The tounge and face sometimes are affected and can cause difficulty in sucking, swallowing and talking. Someone with this form has muscle tone that can change (too tight, too loose) from day to day and even within the day
    3.     Ataxic Cerebral Palsy: problems with balance and coordination. May have an unsteady walk, have a hard time with quick movements or controlled movements (ex: writing). May have trouble controlling hands and arms when reaching.
    4.     Mixed Cerebral Palsy: people have symptoms of more than one type of CP. The most common mix is spastic-dyskinetic CP.

  • Depending on needs the child can have:
    • Family training
    • Counseling
    • Home visits
    • Physical therapy
    • Occupational therapy
    • Speech therapy
    • Hearing loss services
    • Health, nutrition, social work and assistance with service coordination
    • Transportation
    • Assistive teach 
  • Part B of IDEA states that school aged children (3-21 y/o) who qualify can get: to qualify you have to have an IEP in place
    • Physical therapy
    • Occupational therapy
    • Speech therapy
    •  Supplementary aids
      • Adaptive equipment 
      • Special communication systems
