This essay examines gender normative and patriarchal elements of the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty. Disney’s version follows many of these patriarchal ideals with the strong male hero, weak and young female and a wicked female witch. This is problematic because children may internalize the values that are taught in these stories which may lead to them perpetuating gender normative behaviour.

The research I have collected reflect the topic I chose to discuss which is the feminist views on Disney fairy tale films and how overtime Disney princesses reveal gender roles and norms. Throughout different eras these roles develop and change and are based on how society perceives women, which how they think young girls are supposed to act. In earlier times, Disney portrayed princesses like Aurora from Sleeping Beauty, who were seen as housewife's and a damsel in distress. As time went on, movies like The Little Mermaid, show that women can be brave and are curious to see what else is out there. The movie, Tangled shows where we are today and the evolution of how women are looked at how, you do not always need a man by your side. For further research I will focus on how these gender roles have greatly influenced the community and the children growing up and focus more on what has caused this development.
