         <description><![CDATA[<div>izard Theory: 10 basic emotions, cross-cultural, present in infancy, all other emotions are a combination of the original 10. 6 basic are joy anger disgust surprise sadness and fear<br><br>ekman's theory: facial muscles are used to indicate emotion and are universal<br><br>Benefits of smiling: <br>-critical for social interaction: cues more attractiveness, success, stronger immune system, lower stress, lower age<br>-more duchenne smile in yearbook-&gt; happier once they got older<br>-facial expression partially drives emotion<br><br>Learned motives: social motives learned through modeling<br>-aggression: intent to inflict harm, connection to learned helplessness<br>-achievement: need to excel or overcome obstacles, highly motivated children and upbringing, emotional and cognitive roots<br><br>Primary drive: hunger, <br>Secondary drive: smell good food so you eat even though you aren't hungry<br><br>Stimulus motives: unlearned motives that encourage exploration of the world, used to obtain information of the world...even when bored<br><br>3 Theories for Hunger Drive:<br>1. levels of glucose: low blood sugar encourages hunger<br>2. Hypothalamus: lateral hypothalamus stimulates hunger; ventromedial stimulates fullness<br>3. Stomach/Intestines: stomach receptors sense calories, triggers hormone; smaln intestine stimulates satiety center decreasing food intake<br><br>Thirst drive:<br>-hypertonicity: cellular dehydration acts because of osmoreceptor in hypothalamus; stimulating thirst<br>-hypotension: high pressure baroreceptors in carotid sinus and aorta sense it; swelling of body, too much fluid<br><br>Sodium stimulation:<br>-inside cells: monitors detect water level, salt causes cells to lose water, activated hypothalamus<br>-outside cells: extracellular fluid detected through kidneys if low increases thirst<br><br>Stress responses:<br>-adaptive-level phenomenon: ability to form judgments of sounds, lights, based on prior experience<br>-positive psychology: study of optimal human functioning. aims to promote conditions that allow people to thrive<br>-General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS): process through which we respond to certain stressful events: alarm, resistance, exhaustion<br>-Yerkes Dodson Theory: optimum stress necessary for optimum performance; too much stress=bad, too little=bad, must have the right amount for success</div>]]></description>
