“The Day You Begin” by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael Lopez. This lesson plan is for children to not be afraid of stepping up and talking about themselves. Teaching them that even if there are differences between you and others, it gives not right to treat them any different. Visualizing drawings and pictures on the activity paper/ board is a really great way of discovering new items, food, languages, etc.

Have them look in this mirror and give examples of how their physical appearance is alike and how it is different. Stress complimentary statements. Have each group tell the class one physical similarity and difference. Switch about 5 times.

❖ Go outside to a grassy area if possible. Ask a question (i.e. What do you like more? vanilla ice cream or chocolate, trucks or trains, etc.) and have the children run to one side for one choice or another side for the other. Repeat around 5 times. After each question, encourage children to look around and see whether their classmates have the same favorites or different ones.

Day 5 (20 minutes)

❖ At circle time show t-rex and brontosaurus again to discuss what they ate (carnivore vs. herbivore). Discuss the different types of food each child likes to eat at home. Compare different cultures.

❖ Place pictures of different types of food and ask children if they like them and / or eat them at home. Start with hamburgers (Penelope’s food of choice) and go to other types of cuisine; Spanish, Indian, Mediterranean, etc. If a child says they have that kind of food at home, ask questions about how their caregiver prepares it or if they have any other cultural traditions around food they would like to share.

Assessment

❖ Student participation in discussions and activities.

❖ Effort demonstrated in coloring / writing activity.

❖ Observing if children are grasping the concept of empathy and understanding of different

cultures and friendships.

Alignment with Objectives

❖ This lesson plan is designed to help children understand their differences and build empathy at an age-appropriate level.

❖ Through class discussion and activities, children will observe how they can embrace diversity, celebrate each other's similarities and differences, and how to be a good friend. This promotes anti-bias, inclusive behavior in the classroom.

This week-long, play-based lesson uses: "Dear Primo: A Letter to My Cousin," by Duncan Tonatiuh to introduce preschool children to concepts of identity, culture, and connection. Through hands-on learning centers such as dramatic play, art, and storytelling, children explore similarities and differences in their daily lives and those of others. The lesson promotes anti-bias goals by encouraging empathy, inclusive interactions, and an appreciation for diverse experiences.
