I didn't really grow up with a lot of it. I think the most expensive piece of technology I needed in school was a graphing calculator... In elementary and middle school, I remember using basic calculators with only addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square roots. We didn't have computers. I loved when the teacher would bring in the film projector and, I think they were 16mm movies, so we could watch a documentary or something."

I remember getting so excited when the VHS player came out because it meant I could sit in the back and work on other homework. I hated the overhead projector, I think that's what its called. The teacher would put a piece of paper on it and it would project it onto the chalkboard so that we could follow along as she solved the problem. It was awful, blurry and, if you couldn't see it, you had no choice but to squint because there wasn't a zoom function like there is now."

VHS was introduced a little bit when I was in middle school but we didn't use it much in the classroom. When I was in high school, computers were introduced so we had computers in the computer lab, but nowhere else, not at home either. In my computer science class, we started learning about DOS. DOS terrified me. I was convinced that I was gonna blow up the school, but I didn't. So we had computers in that class, but for all the other typing we needed to do, we used typewriters, which were good for their time but quickly became outdated. We even had a driver's education simulator that projected a movie that made it look like you were driving. That was really cool."

I loved the computers mostly because I could mess around on them and explore the internet. I hated those little calculators though. Those smartboards were pretty dope. They were interactive enough that we were allowed to use them and work through the problems using them. They were so much easier than a whiteboard. If we didn't have the technology that we did, most of the classes I loved wouldn't have existed.
