I was raised in the late 80's early 90's where gender roles and family structures were all the rage. In 2009 I became a parent myself initially a single parent. Within a few years I decided I wanted a "Stable Home" or a family structure for my son and I. I met a man who was a few years older than me and was excited to start his own family. His idea of a family was he went out of the home and was the breadwinner and the woman would be a home-maker and doing all duties for the children, home and for him because he worked outside of the home. I did this for 8 years, I ended up having 2 beautiful children with him. Once the economy started shifting he had decided solely that our new family structure/ dynamic was a duel income house he was not planning on participating with any extra tasks on his end he asserted his POWER. That's when the abuse was more direct and frequent towards me. He expected me to care for him our children, the  house and our animals as well as work fulltime. As young mother (29) at the time I was burnt out by the thought of a second shift and scared of entering the work force with such a Gap of experience. This lead me to have to internalize and decide that I need to remove myself and my 3 children from this flawed family structure. Fast forward from 2020. I have been enrolled as a fulltime student at Durham College for Marketing polishing my skills I had from before I had children. Each thing in society has a job that helps the whole society. As a student of sociology, I find conflict theory to be a useful lens for analyzing the social conflict that exists in gender roles . These expectations can shape how men and women communicate, work, play, and relate to each other. So I thought I would have a sharper understanding to enter into this GNED. Since being in this course I understand that both my GNED's are under the social science umbrella which I feel will be beneficial towards my main study of Marketing/ Sales. Sociology focuses on human behaviors in large groups and society where as psychology focuses on human behaviors on an individual level. This class allows me to understand other perspectives. I can also understand and appreciate how diverse we are as humans. I feel that this course will enhance my critical thinking and analytical skills for my future endeavors. Finally, I appreciate what this class has done for me on a psychological level specifically this project self reflecting has made me become more compassionate towards my past and how others have treated me.
