Poem: "Maybe Tomorrow" by Patricia McCormick

This short poem is a great example to show students just how much of an impact receptiveness has to a poem. In the excerpt, the author executes how exhausted and hopeless the characters feel by repeating "maybe tomorrow" in hopes for more rainfall.

Poems: "Mama" and "Lili" by Jacquelin L. Woodson

The combination of these poems shows a great example of using the five senses to convey memories or experiences. With just the thought of two simple things, the main character is able to reminisce about time shared with their sister and mother. In addition, similar to "Maybe Tomorrow" by Patricia McCormick, this author, Jacquelin Woodson also expressed the slow movement of time by repeating "some days like today and yesterday and probably tomorrow" throughout her poems.

The opening chapter in this text is an awesome resource for students to understand how inserting imagery into their writings can make it sound even more beautiful. The first few pages of this book are so finely detailed in regard to the author's choice of words and the vocabulary used to describe her living conditions. It seems as though the readers can completely visualize the scenery Sandra is portraying through her descriptions.

This text shows how incorporating tone of voice, and appropriate dialect can make your writings sound more authentic. The author was able to seamlessly illustrate how slaves in the 1800's spoke and enunciated their words. This gives the reader a clear sense of the time period in which the events of the text occurred.

Dear Stephen,
You and I both know the history we share. Even through the roughest points in our relationship, we still continue to hold tight to one another. I know, and have seen the doubts rise and the self confidence diminish within yourself as we push even deeper into adulthood. There are mounds of goals and expectations for us to uphold to. With all of the stress, I know you sift the world clean for something to help you cope the pressure. However, that does not have to jeopardize your honesty. Sometimes you tell so many white lies to protect yourself from the backlash. Maybe because these tales aren't detrimental to our relationship, I choose to sweep things under the rug. I just want you to know that I love you, and I'll always continue to be by your side through this journey called "life". I just hope you can learn to maneuver through it the honest way.
Love, Destini

To begin this project, I decided to go ahead and create my Hand Map as a foundation for my ideas. The concept of my hand map mirrors the example that was provided. I decided to designate an emotion for each finger, and jot down supporting details for justification. I chose not to limit myself when determining where in my life I wanted to pull my experiences from to keep my options open.

Next, for the Mentor Texts, I chose two poems that had very captivating titles in hopes that I would connect to the text. Luckily, that method worked so I did the same selection process for the narrative and letter excerpts. For each of my mentor texts, I began brain storming possible writing crafts prior to reading anything. I did this to prepare my mind to easily detect when I came across a solution. I even sometimes had to read several pages in the text until I came across a writing craft I wanted to connect the text to.

For the remainder of the multi genre pieces I posted, I was able to easily refer to previous entries in my Writer's Workshop notebook. However, the letter had a subject matter which was different than the other content I displayed. I just felt as though I wanted to write my letter to someone near and dear to my heart, and reflects how I feel in this exact point in my life.

I enjoyed connecting emotions and memories to my writing. It's definitely a process that requires you to extract feelings and thoughts that could've been buried deep. The graphic organizer was useful, however, I believe that meaningful prompts are what get me to produce my most authentic writing pieces. I enjoyed the poems the most because there can be so much impactful and meaningful information in just a number of short stanzas. On the other hand, the subject of the poem can be light, humorous and lengthy in words. I enjoy how customizable poetry is. I like letters the least because I don't have too much of a personal connection with them. Also, I don't feel as creatively liberated when writing letters.

I would adapt Hand Maps and Small Moment Narratives in my own classroom. These strategies can be really fun and tweaked for any grade level.

The technology tool being used is Padlet. I have a history using this site, therfore I'm very comfortable and well adapted to it's layout. The pros are that it's easy to use, simple layouts, and customizable. The cons include having to pay for a subscription after a certain amount of Padlets created, and you can't change the color of the fonts and highlights :(. Lastly, there needs to be a more diverse selection of female emojis with relatable skin tones! Ha :)
