The three Psychomotor abilities are:

Reaction time - which is the ability to act quickly when receiving a stimulus to making a movement, with the start of the movement being the body of the performer.

Coordination - this is the ability to utilise different joints and muscles in a specific sequence or order to perform an action.

Balance - this is having the ability to keep stability during an action

Perceptual involves interpreting and using the information that has been received for the bodies senses, which means using the things in the environment that you can see, smell, taste, feel or hear. The performer will use the environment to make decisions on certain actions they may complete during their performance. An example of this could be a padal player having to look at where the sun is and if its going to be in their eyes, maybe even needing to wear a hat to help their vision

Fluency looks at the execution of the skill and how it is performed, for example if the skill that is being performed is smooth and looks natural instead of it looking disjointed, slow or uncomfortable. For example my first elite performer Chingotto will make the execution of certain skills such as the serve look simple and quick, placing it perfectly almost every time in the opponents half, this is due to the amount of practice and experience he has. Whereas my first performer Aaron who has not had the practice or past experience looks slower and needs more time to focus on what he’s doing rather than having the muscle memory to almost do it with no effort.

Control looks at the combination of speed, accuracy and distance. This means that a performer is able to manoeuvre themselves properly in order for the ball to be hit exactly where they want it to go. Without control of what you or the ball is doing this will lead to mistakes as well as effecting the fluency of a skill. This links to my first elite performer Chingotto being able to place the ball exactly where he wants it with the right speed and accuracy as he has control over these due to practice and experience. Then linking to Aaron who will focus more on getting it over the net and possibly in an area that he wanted it rather then the exact spot.

The Economy of Efficiency of Movement is when a skill is completed successfully, how quickly was it completed (Efficiency) and was there any errors (Economy). This is as for a skill to be completed at a high level it is needed to be done in the quickest time possible with almost zero errors. Errors could be the technique by the performer that may effect the outcome of the skill. Performers may make these mistakes due to the little amount of time that they have to complete the skill.

Consistency of Outcome looks at if the performer can complete the skill multiple times, every time being similar to the last with minimal to no errors. Practice and experience plays a bit part when looking at the consistency of outcome as the more you do the skill when training or in different game scenarios it will become muscle memory enabling you to complete it fluently and with control. My second performer Jake will not be consistent with his outcome as he has not practiced skills such as the smash enough to get it right every time, leading him to make errors such as putting too much power or too little power on it, as well as possibly hitting the net due to lack of accuracy.

Abilities play an important role in the development of sports skills, as athletes with higher abilities tend to learn and adapt to new techniques more quickly than those with lower abilities. These abilities serve as a foundation for skill acquisition and include factors such as speed, agility, and power. When these abilities are well-developed, high level sports skills become easier compared to situations where these abilities are underdeveloped. For instance, in padel, a player with no prior experience in the sport but having good agility, strength, and endurance will likely give them the necessary skills quicker than someone without these pre-existing abilities.

The difference between skills and abilities is the fact that skills require a combination of various abilities to be effectively carried out. Many abilities are learnt during childhood and throughout development, and these are then integrated to form specific skills. For instance, someone might possess a talent that allows them to perform a task with consistency and accuracy without prior practice. This talent is made up of various abilities that enable them to carry out the skill. In sports like padel, for example, a player must use different skills, such as executing a serve, which requires psychomotor abilities like coordination to perform effectively.

There are three main categories of skills, these are cognitive, perceptual, and motor.

Cognitive skills involve mental processes and are often considered intellectual in nature. These abilities influence how information is perceived and play a crucial role in assessing situations accurately. They are vital for performers to make informed and effective choices, for example, deciding whether to take an aggressive or defensive approach during a game.

Perceptual skills, involve interpreting information received from the environment. The brain processes these external factors, although not every piece of information will be noticed, this often depends on a person’s experience and ability to focus. For example, a golfer may assess the wind effecting the direction they may hit it.

Motor skills refer to physical movements that require muscle coordination and control. These skills depend on the activation of voluntary muscles to carry out specific actions. A typical example would be a sprinter maintaining their lane throughout a race.

There are two main types of environmental influences on performance, open and closed skills.

Open skills involve actions that require continuous adaptation due to changing surroundings. Athletes must constantly respond to what’s going on around them. For example, a football team, playing an away game can create a less familiar environment, which might cause anxiety or nerves. Players would need to manage these feelings to perform well. In an individual sport like padel, an open skill would be reacting to an opponent’s return, as the player cannot guess the type or direction of the shot and must respond quick enough.

Closed skills are practiced movement patterns that stay consistent and are uneffected by the environment. These skills allow the performer to execute actions in a controlled and predictable way. A clear example in an individual sport like padel would be performing a serve, where the player has full control over timing and technique without needing to react to external changes.

Movements and skills can be grouped into two main categories, fine and gross. Fine motor skills involve precise actions using small muscle groups, often in the hands or fingers. An example would be taking a three point shot in basketball, where the movement mainly comes from the wrist and fingers to shoot the ball into the net.

Gross motor skills require the use of larger muscle groups and typically involve full body movement. An example of this is bowling in cricket, which uses multiple areas of the body, including the legs, core, and arms, to complete the action.

Skills can also be grouped based on how clearly their start and finish points can be identified. Continuous skills have no clear beginning or end as they flow without interruption and can be maintained for as long as necessary. An example for padel is the forehand shot during a rally, where the movement is smooth and repeated as the ball is hit back and forth.

Discrete skills, have a definite start and finish. Although they can be performed repeatedly, each attempt is a separate action. In padel, serving is an example of a discrete skill because it begins with actions like bouncing the ball and ends with striking it over the net.

Serial skills are made up of a pattern of discrete movements that are combined to form a more difficult action. In padel, a serve followed by a volley would be an example. These actions are linked in a specific order and performed one after the other to achieve a tactical outcome

Timing is the ability to perform a skill at the most effective moment. In padel, this plays an important role for multiple reasons. One key benefit is improved accuracy, striking the ball at just the right moment increases the chances of placing it precisely where the player wants. Another advantage of good timing in padel is that it can help generate power. When players connect with the ball at the top of its bounce or in coordination with their body movement, they are able to hit stronger, more effective shots. Timing also contributes to managing the rhythm of the game. By adjusting when they hit the ball, players can influence the flow of play, helping them stay in control and confuse their opponents.

Pacing refers to the ability to control the speed and rhythm of performance, including how and when to use more energy during a game. It’s about knowing when to apply pressure and when to hold back in order to keep endurance across a match. In padel, pacing is essential for several reasons. One benefit is saving energy by adjusting the intensity of their play, athletes can prevent early fatigue and carry on their performance for longer periods. Another reason pacing is important is that it enables control over the game’s tempo. By managing how fast the match progresses, players can influence the overall flow and momentum of play. Strategic use of pacing can be a tactical advantage. Changing the pace either speeding up or slowing down can break an opponent’s rhythm, increase pressure, and cause them to make mistakes, giving the player more control over the game.

My second performer is Jake, who is also 18 years old and had little to no experience or participation making a cognitive padal player, this will lead to him also making many mistakes as he is still learning new skills whilst practicing. At times Jake may look uncomfortable performing skills as he will not know how to complete then properly.

Reaction time links to how quickly an athlete can respond to a stimulus. In the video, the players received a return shot that went in an unexpected direction, making them to react quicker and move to return the ball. This needed good coordination and fast reaction time, as they had to figure out the stimulus, decide on an appropriate response, and act fast to successfully make the return.

Balance is the ability to stay steady while carrying out movements. In the video, the athlete had to jump quite high to reach a shot, when landing, needed balance to stay upright and prepared for the next shot. Maintaining balance is essential during games, as a lack of stability can leave a player unprepared to respond effectively to incoming shots.

Coordination is the effective and smooth use of multiple body parts at the same time. In the video, the player carrys out a smash shot, which demands a high level of coordination. To create enough power, the player must correctly align their feet, rotate the hips, and position the shoulders to time the jump and strike the ball with the appropriate force.

Flexibility is how well the muscles and joints can move through their full range of motion. In this video, the player had to extend their body to reach the ball and return it. This quality is important in matches, as there are many situations where a player will need to stretch or reach with different parts of the body to make successful returns that would be missed if they didn’t.

Strength is the ability of a muscle group to apply force and produce movement. The player returned a shot using upper body power, without the aid of jumping or running. Strength is essential in situations where the performer doesn’t have time or space to build momentum, as muscular power alone can be enough to carry out an effective shot.
