Discourses correspond roughly to dimensions of texts which have traditionally been discussed in terms of 'content', 'ideational meanings', 'topic', 'subject matter', and so forth. There is a good reason for using 'discourse' rather than these traditional terms: discourse is a particular way of constructing a subject-matter, and the concept differs from its predecessors in emphasizing that contents or subject-matters - areas of knowledge - only enter texts in the mediated form of particular constructions of them (Fairclough, 1992, s. 127-128).
