In the song "Good kid" by Kendrick Lamar he talks about the negative influences such as gang culture and police brutality that is brought upon his neighborhood. The song is called "Good kid" because it talks about his upbringing as the "good kid" in a gang and police violent environment. Bringing up the gang culture, he shares his experience with gangs and how troubling they were for him. "...But what am I 'posed to do when the topic is red or blue. And you understand that I ain't. But know I'm accustomed to just a couple that look for trouble. And live in the street with rank..." here he talks about how he would be friends that were part of conflicting gang, causing him to get harassed by other gang members even though he wasn't apart of any gang. He also touches on the harassment that him and other people in the community got from cops. "I heard 'em chatter: "He's prob'ly young, but I know that he's down. Step on his neck as hard as your bullet-proof vest. He don't mind, he know we'll never respect", Kendrick here is saying that the police growing up would assume that he was gang affiliated and knows that the police would never respect him.

I really enjoy "Good kid" and the rest of Kendrick's discography because it shines light on such negative subjects that sometimes we don't see with our eyes. When I was a kid I never really understood that there were such racial injustice until I started picking up listening to Kendrick Lamar. I never got it because I was white and never really gone through or let alone seen it first hand. It really opened my eyes to what is going on today.
