Homeschooling is better for students.

Pro~ The affirmative side states that in bigger schools teachers teach in a classroom of 40 or more students. In college this may be expectable but in high school, students should be allowed one on one. Teachers spread themselves too thinly to provide personalized education. If a child was homeschooled they would recieve the full benefit and support of the one-on-one they need. The number one positive attribute for home schooling your child is knowing their safety. A home school parent would not need to worry whether or not a school shooter is going to come or not.

Con~The negative side states that the number one issue is the interaction with other people. Homeschooled students are more sheltered, they may get out some, but not as much as say a public school student. The socialization of the student may be thrown out the window, for the child's future this could be extremely damaging to their future employment. There is no competition with home schooled kids. In a normal school setting, competition plays a role in improving grades for fear that someone else is doing better.

In my opinion home schooling does serve a purpose. I believe students with certain disabilities to where it is more damaging to the child to be at school rather than at home should be allowed to be home schooled, as well as teens with children. But I do not believe home schooling prepares students for the "real" world. The shock of social pressures and the cruelty that occurs in the world will hit them all at once, rather than slowly over time. School is more than just a place where students learn, it's where they set the basis for their entire lives.

Homeschooling: Good or Bad?
People on the affirmative side say that they feel safe being in their own home. You get to work at your own pace. No drama. The student gets more sleep, and isn't sleep deprived.
People on the negative side say that you have less friends. You won't have as many opportunities, and lack of exposure to find interests outside of your own.
I agree with the pro side.

My debate topic is, homeschooling, is it positive or is it negative?

People on the affirmative side of this topic say that homeschooling gives kids a sense of freedom. The freedom they have gives them options as to what they learn and when they learn it. Homeschooling allows families to go on vacations at various times because the student is not confined to a strict schedule. Homeschooling can also give students a freedom from bullies and peer pressure. Students can dress and act however they choose which may make them feel more comfortable.

People on the negative side of this topic say, that homeschooling limits a child's social interaction. They say that students should interact with others outside of their families. Homeschooling today is considered a negative thing so students may be the target of negative comments.

After considering multiple views regarding both sides of the topic, I think that homeschooling is very situational and depending on the situation a child is in will determine their need to be homeschooled. I also believe that if a child is being negatively influenced by peers at school then yes, there should be an alternative for them.

http://www.debate.org/homeschooling/

Amber Hickman

Homeschooling Vs. Public Schooling

Pros- Those on the affirmative side say those who home school are more likely to excel. Also, many kids are bullied or have special needs, so homeschooling would be more sufficient. Homeschooling allows parents to tailor their kids education, as not all kids in one grade are at the same level of comprehension.

Cons- Those on the opposing side say public schooling allows kids to socialize with others and form relationships. Some parents are more lenient and will let their child sleep in and do no real work. Public schooling also prepares kids for the "real world" and boosts their team-working skills.

My Opinion- I stand with the opposing side and say that public schooling is better. Kids who homeschool will put their work aside. I think only certain kids should be allowed to homeschool, if they can prove they are trustworthy enough to be trusted to do all their work at home. There are students in this school that don't even do their homework assigned by teachers to do at home. I wouldn't trust them to complete all their homework and studies at home by themselves.

Source-
http://www.debate.org/polls/homeschool-vs-school

http://www.debate.org/polls/would-you-prefer-to-be-homeschooled-or-be-in-a-public-school

The students have the freedom to learn what they want for as long as they want. It also gives students emotional freedom as they are away from peer pressure, bullying, hazing, and competition of public schools.

Cons-
Consumes a lot of your parents time. Limited team sports. Is seen as an oddity, and homeschooled kids are often seen as weird or abnormal. Keeps students away from interacting with kids their own age as often as other kids get to. Can create stress because they're at home all the time.
I'm on the negative side of homeschooling. I think that it's good for kids to go to school and interact with each other. I think that parents shouldn't have to teach their kids, and should have a day job, and go to their job while their kids are at school.

Pros and Cons to Homeschooling and going to college.

Pros: Studies have been shown that homeschooled often preform better on standardized test. They can often get more credits completed before their first year of college. Students are actively being recruited for college. They are not required to have transcripts to get into college. Homeschooled kids can often go ahead and be involved in activities within their local school district. The students learn at their own pace and in the way they learn best.

Cons: Kids are constantly in one place. When public schooled kids learn, its at one building, than they can come home to a place different different from all of their learning. Homeschooled kids don"t have they same friend making opportunities that public school kids do. Your parents are your teachers. So you get mad at them, there's not as much space and time for them to leave and think it over, or go complain to there parents and just have the parents this and explain. Everybody is together all the time.

I believe that homeschooling depends on the family and their situations. It takes a lot of time from families, and other work.

http://www.onlinecollege.org/2011/09/13/15-key-facts-about-homeschooled-kids-in-college/

https://www.familyeducation.com/school/homeschooling-support/homeschooling-pros-cons?page=2

Theoretically, the parent could teach the kid more real-life skills as well.
Cons- The kid is being taught by non-teachers which can cause problems. If there is more then one child then it makes it a lot harder because they are teaching more then one grade level which can be very challenging.
I think that kids should just go to school like everyone else, when you are home all day by yourself or even if you have siblings you do not learn to communicate with other people that maybe you are not with everyday.

Homeschooling-

Pros- Homeschooling offers a different way to educate. Some parents believe taking their children's education into their own hands is beneficial. Some parents don't trust the schooling system and don't believe their children learn enough. It is also beneficial to keep children from being bullied and to let them decide what they want to learn.

Cons- There is no way to know exactly that the child is being taught the way they are supposed to and if they are putting the proper time in. Children also lose valuable social skills by being stuck at home. They also miss out on the life lessons you can learn at school, like confidence, standing up for yourself, and making friends.

I think in certain cases homeschooling is appropriate. I believe children who are homeschooled should be monitored by someone outside of their family to make sure they are meeting the appropriate criteria.

The pros and cons of homeschooling

Pros: Homeschooled kids do well on standardized tests, and as adults, have a reputation for being self-directed learners and reliable employees. Most homeschooled students have the choice to study and learn what they want, when they want, for as long as they want. Peer pressure, competition, boredom, and bullies — are all part of a typical school day, and when children are homeschooled, this is less of a problem for them. It takes a lot of time out of a parents schedule and it can be very harsh with money. There is a lot less of an opportunity for children to play team sports, which can cause problems for children being active and having friends.
I agree with both sides, because there are positives about both sides, however it should be the childs decision if they are homeschooled or not.

A home school parent would not need to worry whether a school shooter is going to come or not.

In a normal school setting, competition plays a role in improving grades for the fear that someone else is doing better.

School is more than just a place where students learn, it's where they set the basis for their entire lives.

http://www.homeschool-companion.com/pros-and-cons-of-homeschooling.html

Homeschooled kids don’t have to worry about bullying, peer pressure and spiteful competition so their self-esteem won’t have to suffer needlessly.
2. They usually accomplish in a few hours each day what typically takes a week or more to complete in a classroom.
Con:
1.

Homeschooling

Pros- While parents homeschool their children, they have the opportunity to determine what their kids are learning in school. They can make priorities in what they are taught. Another advantage is their safety. They are less likely to be bullied (face-to-face) while being homeschooled because they don’t have to be around negative people. They also should never have to worry about a school shooting or anything like that.

Cons- One disadvantage is simply the cost of homeschooling. They have to pay for the curriculum and all materials. These kids may not have a structured day like the majority of us do. We do the same thing at the same time almost every day, whereas they have a little bit more flexibility which might not be beneficial later on in life. Kids also don’t get the chance to grow up with other kids their age on a daily basis and don’t have all of the benefits and opportunities that we do.

I personally think that homeschooling can be good and “bad”. I think kids should have somewhat of a say in what they do for schooling, because leaving a kid in an education system where they aren’t happy and motivated to learn would not be beneficial for anyone. If they do homeschooling, I feel they should interact more in their community. They might miss out on choir, p.e., plays, sports, and other activities that a lot of students really enjoy.

https://www.globalstudentnetwork.com/pros-and-cons-of-homeschool/

These kids do well on standardized tests and are being welcomed in universities. With homeschooling, the have a lot more of an educational freedom as to what they learn. This is used to benefit the child more on their ability rather than one big group of children. There is no busy work when it comes to worksheets and they are allowed much more hands on experiences without the peer pressures of school but still get the option of participating in events within the community school. They also have to learn discipline by managing their time but still getting all their work done.

Cons- The aspect of homeschooling is something that can be very hard and time consuming for the parent considering one having to stay home to teach. It is not something that is very high when it comes to income and can also be very stressful. Especially in families with more than one child. The child also may be held back emotionally due to not having the interaction with more than on person each day outside of the family.

I believe that homeschooling, for the right families, can be a good thing. It is definitely not for everyone but it some cases, it may benefit that student the most. Many oppose it because of the isolation compared to children who attend school but most homeschooled students have the option of attending school dances, being a part of the arts, and sports and other clubs. This way they still benefit from their learning while still interacting with other peers.

https://www.familyeducation.com/school/homeschooling-support/homeschooling-pros-cons?page=2

Pros:
-Educational freedom; the freedom to choose your curriculum. This way it's easier to find classes that are at your level, specific for you
-Scheduling freedom; homeschooling opens up a lot of time for other events and plans that don't have to revolve around school hours
-No absent days; it's hard to miss school when you live at your school, so this would allow for more hours in class without having to worry about sick days, whether days, etc.
-Paced learning; depending on how long it takes a student to catch on to new subjects, this can slow or speed up the process to your need. This means a person of advanced intelligence could finish school in as little as 7 years vs 12 years+ at public school.

Cons:
-Time restraints; while homeschool will open up schedules, it also takes time out of schedules for the parents.
-Financial restraints; Curriculum can be expensive,
-Social restraints; Aside from the occasional outing, it's difficult for students to be around people their age. Unless the parent seeks out opportunities at nearby schools, they will be lacking in social interaction.

My opinion:
I have no opinion weighing to one side or the other. I personally wouldn't choose to do it, but if someone else does I wouldn't necessarily urge them to get their kids into a public school either. I believe there are pros and cons to both homeschooling and public schooling.

Pro: Parents have the right to teach their children values and beliefs. Homeschooling children brings the parents closer together. Homeschooled kids dont have to worry about being bullied, and peer pressure. Parents with kids who have been the target of bullying have resorted to homeschooling to protect their kids from the harmful effects of harassment. Homeschooling parents and children enjoy about it is the fact that they no longer have to work their lives around homework and school hours. They usually accomplish in a few hours each day what typically takes a week or more to complete in a classroom setting.

Cons: It is time consuming. Homeschooling parents spend a chunk of their time planning, driving their kids to and from activities and participating in them. Ideally, in a two-parent home, one of the parents work while the other devotes time to homeschooling. It becomes even more challenging for single parents who choose to homeschool their kids because they need to balance time between work and educating their kids. In order to homeschool their kids, one of the parents usually forgo full-time employment and this can hurt the family’s finances. Many homeschooling families mention the lack of available community sports activities wherein their kids can be accepted.

http://www.publicschools.org/homeschooling-pros-cons/

Pros and cons on online homeschooling.
Pros- Kids can easily search on Google, watch videos on Youtube, and communicate with others on apps. Online studying gives the kids a safe environment. Parents can select their courses and not have to direct them. Eighty two percent of homeschoolers prefer online studying and said the quality of the education is better than local high school. Online courses provide students with more choices and freedom. The lessons and curriculum is made for you. This type of schooling can also save money for the government.

Cons- Online studying makes public education lose its students. Makes teachers get layoffs and the unemployment rate rises. Working with multiple children can be hard because not every curriculum has different grade levels. Online work typically takes longer.

My opinion- I think online homeschooling gives people an easier, cheaper, more flexible and more convenient way of learning knowledge. It cuts down the time that parents should spend with kids on studying, but in my opinion, the computer is the kids’ teacher, which is smart enough for replacing the parents’ knowledge.
https://ifpwedkakaxi.wordpress.com/method/

http://www.middlewaymom.com/qa-pros-and-cons-of-virtual-school/

Homeschooling

Pros- It is becoming more and more popular growing 7 to 15 percent each year. Students that are homeschooled do good on testing and are welcomed at colleges. As they grow older they tend to be self-directed learners and reliable employees. They have the choice to study and learn what they want and not something they have no interest in. Families can plan vacations and events whenever they please. Homeschooled kids show a higher self-esteem due to acting and dressing the way they want without feeling the need to fit in.

Cons- It takes up much of the parents time. For families who struggle financial, homeschooling would not be the best choice being one parent would have to stay home all day not making much of an income while the other is always away trying to keep the family afloat. It can be hard on the parents to be with their child everyday, all day. Depending on the situation the student may or may not be able to participate in sports.

In my opinion I think homeschooling could be more beneficial to a student who doesn't enjoy going to school and has a rough time getting along with other peers. Then again I think it is important to go out of your comfort zone and try things and not having the same day/routine over and over.

Homeschooling

The affirmative side states that homeschooled students have a choice in what they study and learn what they want, when they want, and for as long as they want. Students who get homeschooled have a more flexible schedule to do things outside of school with their lives no longer revolving around school hours and homework. These families can live their lives according to what works for them and still get an education. Peer pressure and bullying can have a huge affect on whether someone is homeschooled or not. Studies show that most homeschooled students have a higher self-esteem that stays intact and these students can continue to thrive.

The negative side states that homeschooling your kids takes away a lot of time from the parents. Most parents who homeschool don’t sit at the table with a book and their child(ren). The kids have hands-on experiences and activities and planning these things can be very time consuming. It can also cause financial restraints upon families, and this can be a big sacrifice for families who are struggling to balance their budget. There are also limited team sports for the homeschooled child to involve themselves in. Sometimes where these people live also plays an impact on whether they can join teams or not and there might be different rules for different schools when it comes to this topic.

I am with the affirmative side because I think it is good that students can go at the pace they want with their learning. Sometimes bullying also has a great impact if someone is homeschooled or not and I think it is a great option for those students to get away from all of the negative people at public school.

https://www.familyeducation.com/school/homeschooling-support/homeschooling-pros-cons?page=2

Affirmative: The child being homeschooled gets more freedom when choosing what they want to learn about, rather than following a curriculum made by an association of teachers. They can also plan vacations whenever they want since their hours of freedom do not revolve around school. Peer pressure or bullying will not be a problem with homeschooling, and their self-esteem will remain strong.
Negative: The kids will not know proper socialization skills. They will also develop lazy habits. The parents will not have very much time to themselves, or they will be spending a substantial amount of their money on paying for someone to come to their home to teach their kids. They will also have difficulties being able to find sports to compete in, therefore being athletic and active would be at a disadvantage.
https://www.familyeducation.com/school/homeschooling-support/homeschooling-pros-cons?page=2
