However, his art and his character has always been a favorite of mine simply because of its unapologetic individuality. No voice sounded like his, it was both gritty and delicate. The lyrics of his songs were mostly fragments from his poetry, stitched together to form the words to his music. As a cohesive whole, most of it didn't make sense; but there are many a hidden gems. 

To be honest, I have a hard time loving myself and accepting it as it is right now. Perhaps it is merely insecurity that will pass just with my teenage years, but I still find it a bother. He used to have the same problems, part of the reason why he always wore baggy clothes was because he was insecure of his weight. To me, it is comforting to know that there are people who feel the same, but also infuriating. I hate the fact that we have all been forced into trying to chase after meeting body standards for acceptance. 

Another aspect of his that I relate to was his progressivism. For a 90's rockstar to be someone supportive of women and gay rights is, to me, a sign of his honesty and his unyielding grip on his own values. 

I do not wish to be him, however. I wish to be my own self. Contradictory as it might sound, I want to be like him. I want to be like him in his honesty and his empathy for causes that do not seem to be "his problem" in the first place. I know it all too well, caring for something and only getting chastised for the simple act of giving a crap.
