Many veteran teachers are seen as being “difficult to coach” but I have learned that this is usually just a hesitancy to being vulnerable. A lot of this stems from pre-coaching days where they felt penalized for their lack of understanding. This forced them to be “stuck” instructionally for fear or failing. Providing a safe space for teachers to fail is so important. It provides teachers and mentors a safe place to be candid and reflective about teaching practices which will help students grow. 

Being vulnerable can be especially tough in a professional setting. We want all of our peers to respect our craft. Teachers typically celebrate and show successes, not failures- which are only a progression of learning. When people open up about their struggles they might feel like others are judging them. I think so often we put this pressure on ourselves to know everything or be everything when that’s not the case. I’ve found that being honest really helps open doors with relationships. It all starts with giving an honest answer to the question, “how are you?” Are you really good?
