Self-Reliant Fictional Character

Katniss Everdeen embodies the idea of self-reliance because she made herself learn how to hunt with a bow and arrow to get her own food when living with her family. Also during the actual Hunger Games she didn't rely on a big group for help she was mostly surviving on her own.
Quote:
"Society is a joint-stock company in which the members agree for the better securing of his bread to each shareholder, to surrender the liberty and culture of the eater, The virtue in most request is conformity. Self-reliance is
its aversion."
This excerpt is explaining how society sees people who try to do things differently and repel them for doing so. Same thing as Katniss, the Capitol hated Katniss for trying to beat the Hunger Games in a different way.

In the song "Me, Myself and I", there is a lyric that goes, "I don't need anything to get me through the night
Except the beat that's in my heart
Yeah, it's keepin' me alive", which is similar to a quote from the excerpt which states, "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself." They are similar because they both express the idea that a person does not need anything but themselves to influence how they feel. In addition to the previous sentence, that people should be able to find within themselves the satisfaction of being independent and not having to be satisfied by someone else.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the most famous presidents the United States has seen, was an individual that most of society despised. At the time slavery was a big part of the economy in the South. Lincoln and many others saw how awful slavery was for African Americans and wanted to make a change. The South was furious and this tension between Lincoln and the North and the South eventually led to the Civil War. At the time people saw Lincoln as an unsuitable person to be president. People of today however, see Lincoln as the one to end slavery in the United States, which was a very monumental act for the country. Without Lincoln taking a different approach to the idea of slavery, it still might've been a "normal" thing to this day. All it took was one person to believe it could change and make that change happen if it meant being the most hated person in the country at that time.

Chris McCandless embodies these principles stated in "Self-Reliance" by wanting to stray away from the status quo. McCandless, coming from a very wealthy and stable life, wanted something different with his life. Being around materialistic items his whole life coerced him to venture into the nature of the world. Now McCandless wasn't planning on dying throughout his journey but he wanted to make a change in his life. McCandless wanted to survive on his own with no help from his friends, family, or even strangers who offered to help. With no help from technology of any sorts which gave McCandless a sense of excitement and adventure. Allowing McCandless to go into the unknown of what his next meal might be, where he would be sleeping, how far he would walk. The people who were around him before he made this change in his life couldn't understand why. They couldn't grasped why someone would do this tp themselves for such a long period of time. It showed the types of people who wanted to be self-reliant, McCandless, and the ones who weren't quite self-reliant, those who were in McCandless life.
