This is an updated Workshop Challenge, due to Covid-19. Please note, we cannot change the text on Canvas. Please answer the challenge, below:

UPDATED Challenge:

This week we want you to identify a theme or issue that relates to your locality* and present your findings on the Ideas Wall, prior to the design phase.

1. Research and discover issues that relate to your locality* and post them on the Ideas Wall. REVISED: Direct engagement is encouraged, to identify potential issues, although we understand this is unlikely in the current situation. Show evidence of reaching out, by conducting an email or letter, although we appreciate you may not get a reply.

2. Distill your research to identify one issue you would like to resolve and reveal through a visual outcome.

3. Write a short 200-word project brief that reports on the issue to be solved.

4. Design and produce a visual summary to contextualise your issue and project brief. Your summary can be a digital, print or moving image, but it must be succinct, to enable third party viewers to quickly understand the requirements, needs and challenges.

*Your locality can be broad and refer to your street, district, town, area, county or region.

In a physical working environment, there are a number of reasons why relationships with your coworker can have positive effects both for yourself and for your work output. You spend a lot of time with your coworkers on a daily basis, becoming friends with these people is only natural. You end up enjoying work more when you know you have the support from your friends. You have a support system, someone to talk to that understands what you are going through. It makes you feel part of a team or for some smaller companies a family. Reduces the feelings of loneliness, which encourages motivation and productivity. You end up caring about your work more as you want to support your colleagues. Finally, this also helps your communication and interpersonal skills.

Bridge the gap of making real-life connections with coworkers while working from home. People are working from home all around the globe at the moment but this is something that is commonplace and has highlighted faults in the system. For this brief, I want to propose a method for both continuing and forming relationships with coworkers for businesses that have staff that work from home. This could be a proposal for a new digital tool, a new way of using tools that we already have, a campaign to encourage informal communication or another method to encourage healthy relationships.

https://sashamitchelll.wordpress.com/2020/03/28/research-and-reveal-develop-key-finding-analysis-and-objectives/

I live in a beautiful town in a nice small county surrounded by beautiful countryside, but that countryside can often be littered with unsightly, dirty rubbish. It's not just common to my county, it's estimated that 60 tonnes of illegal rubbish is dumped in Ireland every day. The reason why you may notice it more in the countryside is that usually people travel to remote rural locations where they won't be seen dumping the rubbish. Not only is it unsightly, but it is detrimental to the ecosystem. Recently, the Sub Aqua Team in the town released a video that showed a river bed littered in rubbish. At the moment people are particularly sensitive to hygiene given the Covid19 situation. Maybe I could capitalise on this by getting in touch with the local council to formulate a campaign that would educate people on the harm that this dumping is doing to the environment. So let’s not just wash our hands, let’s wash our countryside.. type-of-thing.

More pressingly, they are unable to conduct home visits and assessments for both foster and permanent homes for their animals. Funding is also extremely difficult when so many events are having to be cancelled.

I would like to explore what could be done locally to tackle this issue – are there other ways the shelters can fundraise and ensure that their animals get visibility so that when the situation is resolved, there will be families waiting to adopt the animals.

Below is a screenshot from a local shelter’s Facebook page – this is just one of many who I am sure are all facing similar issues.

that left me struggling to think of anything better along those lines, so I started to think about my work as a ‘locality’. Like many others, I’m working from home but normally I spend a lot of time there so it kind of fits the bill.

One thing I was thinking about is that the library produces a lot of designed materials (both physically & digitally) and if those materials are well designed, then the various users of the library will benefit. However, there are various individuals and teams producing materials (all doing things slightly differently) but within the small team I am work in, there are three of us doing an increasing amount of design work. None of us are trained (despite me doing this course) and one thing I wonder about is if what if we were all to leave?

Given that ‘design’ in the library is simply an addition to library assistant duties, whoever replaced us would have to start from scratch so would it be possible to create a design toolkit to teach new staff. We have a collection of resources but there is no imperative for anyone to use them, could there be a solution that takes people through various stages of design, explaining why certain things need to be considered? A solution that people would actually enjoy using – those people who are already involved in design might even use it to hone their skills?

I put together a survey to send round colleagues to get a rough idea of their thoughts /approaches to design, so I will see where that leads to.

Issues in Canterbury

Social Isolation
A number of people in Canterbury are reported to be feeling depressed and anxious following the Corona Virus lockdown. It would be good to launch a pen-pal scheme, where participants receive a selection of greetings cards and pre-paid, pre-addressed envelopes to send to their pen pal. The pros is that it might appeal to an older generation that struggle with technology. However, the downside is that this would encourage people to leave the house to post the letter, which is going against the point of the lockdown and some people with mobility issues may struggle.

Food Bank
I've done some project work on the local Food Bank before, but it does of course remain an issue. One idea could be to design a virtual 'food cupboard' app that would let people know which local food banks were in need of which items, and where the items can be purchased.

Homelessness
Homelessness has been a serious problem for the last few years in Canterbury and seems to be getting worse, largely due to the decrease in affordable housing, and the gentrification of the poorer neighborhoods. One idea would be to encourage people to volunteer for a couple of hours each week at the local homeless shelter, by organizing activities like quizzes, gardening, art and educational sessions.

Grow Your Own
Allotment waiting lists are at an all time high in Canterbury, but there is a lot of unused patches of land dotted around which could be turned into tiny community gardens. I have previously looked at a similar idea for the last semester, so I probably won't pursue this idea.

Researching Issues within the Community

Long post incoming! :)

I posted a status on Facebook asking people what the one thing they could fix or improve on in Bracknell was and why. I also posted this on local community groups for a larger response. A lot of the responses were based on the current global pandemic, such as:

• split parent families not being able to see their kids in person

• keeping your distance while shopping which elongates the process and means being outside and at risk for longer

• schools using different online educational platforms for work to do at home

• schools supplying food vouchers for those who would usually have free school meals but that opposes self-isolation rules

Basing a project on the global pandemic and issues based around it seems like too much of an obvious path to go down for this week but there seem to be a lot of opportunities for problem solving.

One of the biggest issues that I have seen in my area over the last week or so is people not being able to collect their prescribed medication because of several reasons:

• the pharmacy can’t find it

• people don’t want to queue for too long

• it’s too busy and easier to come back later

• people have been out and panic bought all of the medication so none is available

So I think my main idea for this week will be to come up with an app or online solution that will help people to be able to get their medication on time, without risk, and without worrying that there won’t be any left. There are already online solutions that doctor surgeries operate that allow you to order your medication online, but I am unsure how well these work as I haven’t been signed up to use it.

Although this solution has been done before, yet the problem of getting medication is still an issue, it makes me wonder how well these solutions actually work. That will be the challenge for me, to make it better than other solutions that are already out there.

So I put a survey together and sent it round people who work in the library asking about how they approach design and what would make it easier for them. (cause sometimes it is a bit of a free for all!)

I’m still getting responses but I was reminded of the design toolkit that was designed for Pete Buttigieg (unfortunately you can’t access it now for obvious reasons) It brought everything you needed together in one place, took you through all the steps in creating something, explaining what to do and I thought this would be a good idea for where I work. And I know a lot of other libraries rely on whatever skills their staff have without training them so it could be useful elsewhere

Obesity in children is relatively high in Nottingham - the NHS reporting 27% of the city's population falls under the 'obese' category. One of the key issues is the lack of public park space - many historic parks have been built on or have become private golf courses.

There is however, miles of unused river bank. My initial ideas are based around recreating these areas (that stretch through the entire city almost undisturbed) to somehow engage the public and re-introduce exercise outdoors.

Whilst we're all in lock-down, working from home, college, school, etc., I discovered a problem which would be a tricky one to solve, especially within the timeframe we have for the project. It's been around for generations but the CV outbreak has made the problem more apparent. How can I get my teenage son out of his pit and into the shower? I've come up with a few solutions, mainly Wallace & Gromit / Heath Robinson based contraptions which would eject him out of the room at the touch of a button, but these would need considerable alterations to the structure of the house. Suggestions welcome…

I am not a native to where I am, I have a vague sense of some issues where I work but nothing with a hook, nothing I can imagine to be pressing right now, and furthermore I have no connection to the local communities whatsoever. So I decided to consider the other communities I am part of now, in isolation, my family, my niece and nephew particularly, and my partners niece and nephew. And the other extended children in the family, the over riding experience for them and their parents is the lack of connection to their friends. This may be a little off the brief, but I feel it will provide me scoop to design something tangible and rich as my Brief 3 output.

So to go alongside my idea of getting kids out more and conquering obesity, I also found out that where I live is the furthest point from the sea in the UK. Usually in the summer the city's residence choose to swim in the river Trent and risk 'Trent belly'. It's also a practice that is now out of bounds.

In short, I have decided to maximise the lack of open space by proposing the abandoned sites along the river are transformed into Lido's (the last in the city was closed down in 1980). SO - I've designed an app for kids (and adults) to find their nearest fresh water, in the hope that exercise becomes an exciting norm.

I'd love all thoughts on this. Blog post tomorrow to explain more.

In Malta, obesity in children is a major issue, and it is on the increase. With the sped up lifestyle, children were often presented with a microwavable dinner or some greasy takeaway. And exercise was not given a priority.
As for adults, statistics are equally appalling. Full-throttle lifestyle meant very little time to cook proper meals, let alone exercise.

My idea in relation to this is to promote the fitness lifestyle as a 'mindset for success' rather than simple meal plans and exercise routines.

As children are more keen on gadgets these days, books seem to be taking the sidelines. Even more so when it comes to reading in Maltese, because most of the reading material is in English.

In addition to this, spelling in both languages has seen a toll in recent years. It is quite sad to see the errors that are made both in written and spoken Maltese.

The idea is to promote reading more and/or shed light on importance of good spelling and grammar.

I decided to combine my initial pen-pal idea with an idea suggested by one of the local residents in my online survey. He said it would be useful if there was a scheme that would allow his children to be able to share their artwork with other kids in the area. I thought that this would be something that would appeal to people of all ages, so my proposal is for 'Creative Canterbury', an art-pal scheme that would allow people to share artwork and little messages with others via a postcard-generating app. Obviously there would need to be one section for children and one for adults to ensure it is kept appropriate.

Blog: https://lucysmagraphicdesignblog.wordpress.com/2020/04/12/week-10-workshop-challenge-research-and-reveal/

I started with identifying 3 initial ideas in my community. My first thought is the animal shelters here. In doing a quick search, they have been closed since mid march, but animal foster homes are still operating which is a relief. As far as I know, there aren't any adoptions taking place, and I'm sure there is an impact I'm not seeing in my initial search.
My second idea is my own work community. Since moving to online teaching, I'm finding a lot of the older generations are resistant to the change. They HAVE to adapt, but I feel their arguments seem to be about fighting for the analog art - So there it is, the conflict between the analog and tech worlds in design.
My 3rd idea and thought is this - is it just me or are the assholes coming out of the woodwork? Ever since CoVID lockdown started, I'm finding people are being down right mean to others. The amount of plastic gloves in the grocery store parking lot is gross - what happened to environmental awareness? One of my Mummy facebook group had a story about a single mother going to the grocery store with her child, because she had no other choice and was berated by the clerk. Hello humanity? What happened to love, peace and hair grease?
