In the 1980s, my mom remembered how classrooms relied on chalkboards, overhead projectors, and handwritten notes. This was the era before personal computers became widespread in schools, so most work was done by hand. Her story connects to how schools in the 1980s focused on traditional teaching methods, even as the “computer revolution” was beginning outside of classrooms. My mom recalled taking a typing class on electric typewriters in high school. She said it felt modern at the time, especially compared to manual typewriters. In many schools during the 1980s, typing was the main way students interacted with “technology,” since computers weren’t widely available yet

In the early 2000s, my brother said computer labs were the center of learning technology. Students had scheduled lab times to practice typing, research online, and learn basic programs like Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. My brother also shared how smartboards started to appear in classrooms around the mid-2000s. Teachers could write digitally, show slideshows, and even play videos during class. For students, this made lessons feel more engaging and modern compared to chalkboards and overheads. This change reflected a broader shift in education—schools were trying to integrate technology into daily instruction. It also shows how quickly tools changed from my mom’s era to his, highlighting how the 2000s set the stage for today’s tech-heavy classrooms.

My little sister described how every student in her school has a Chromebook. She does most of her work online assignments, research, even submitting homework through Google Classroom. She said it feels “normal,” but when compared to my mom and brother’s experiences, it shows just how fast schools have gone digital. One of the biggest parts of her experience was online learning during COVID-19. She remembered logging onto Zoom every day, with breakout rooms, chat features, and online quizzes replacing in-person learning. This was a major shift in education history something no other generation experienced in the same way. It ties directly to the pandemic’s role in accelerating educational technology, showing how schools had to adapt quickly to keep learning going.
