In the brief clip above you will see students having what I call a discussion, and they call a debate about whether or not a hot dog is a sandwich. I normally start off with a bellringer or discussion, but on this day, we started with a silly discussion because that's what I allowed them to do. It was a fun little activity that didn't take long and they really enjoyed. What the students learned that day is that they do have a say in what we do in class.

Pictured here are signs that you would find along the walls of my classroom. One of them lists a general breakdown of the class rules which establishes the structure and expectations of the class. The other two signs are encouraging so my students know they always have a voice and are encouraged to use it

We are currently in the chapter of Constitutional Law in class. The first section talks heavily about the 1st Amendment, so we started class with a warm up activity in which the students were able to pick a side and voice their opinions about previous issues brought up before the Supreme Court regarding freedom of speech.

Before we kicked off our classroom constitution project, I thought it would be great to spread a little bit of kindness on a Friday, so we did a compliment train. Students were picked at random and given 5 to 10 minutes to come up with a compliment about their classmates. The feedback was great, the energy was high, and overall everyone was feeling good.
