Details: Hannah crossed the border into Hungary. She was caught almost immediately by the Hungarian police and tortured cruelly and repeatedly over the next several months. Despite these conditions, Senesh refused to divulge any information about her mission.

Dates: In June 1944, Hannah was captured after entering Hungary and was sent to prison in Budapest, where she was tortured. In November 1944, Hannah came up before a tribunal and eloquently pleaded her case. On the morning of November 7, the officer in charge, Colonel Simon, entered her jail cell and gave her 2 options, she could either beg for a pardon or face death by a firing squad. She went to her death.

Important Facts: Even after having her mother arrested after not seeing her for almost 5 years, Hannah still wasn't cooperating with the police after being caught passing through the Hungary border. When being executed, Hannah refused the blindfold, she stared squarely at her executors and her fate.

After Hannah refused to cooperate and disclose any information to the police, they arrested both her and her mother and the most they ever saw each other in prison was at least a small glance. On the morning of November 7, 1944, she was given 2 options and those were to either beg for pardon or to face death by a firing squad. Hannah Senesh chose death over begging for pardon because she refused to beg clemency from her captors, whom she did not consider legally permitted to try her case. Hannah even decided to refuse to wear a blindfold during her execution in order to face her murderers in the moment before death. To keep her daughter's memories alive, Hannah's mother published all of her daughter's diary, poetry and plays. In 1950, Senesh's remains were buried in the military cemetery on Mt. Herzl.

Hannah Senesh was born in Budapest and became a Zionist and immigrated to Palestine in 1939. In March 1944, she was dropped in Yugoslavia with several other volunteers in order to aid anti-Nazi forces until they would be able to commence their true mission and enter Hungary. In June of that year, Hannah passed the Hungary border into her former motherland. She was almost immediately caught and sent to prison. Hannah refused to cooperate with the police. They then arrested her mother after realizing that she wasn't going to be broken. The two women came face to face for the first time in almost 5 years. On the morning of November 7, 1944, she was executed and refused to wear a blindfold in the process.
