Gustav Kirchhoff was a German physicist. He was born on March 12, 1824 in Königsberg, Prussia, now known as Kaliningrad, Russia, and died on October 17, 1887 in Berlin, Germany. Gustav and a chemist named Robert Bunsen created the theory of spectrum analysis. In 1845, Gustav first announced how to be able to calculate currents, or Kirchhoff's Law. In 1847, Kirchhoff became Privatedozen at the University of Berlin. Then in 1854, he became the Professor or Physics at the University of Heidelberg, where he met Bunsen and created the spectrum analysis. In 1875, he was appointed to the chair of mathematical physics for the University of Berlin.

Alessandro Volta was an Italian physicist, pioneer, and chemist. He was born on February 18, 1745 in Como, Italy and died on March 5, 1827 in Como, Italy. Volta created the first electric battery, or a continuous source of an electric current. He became a professor of physics at the Royal School of Como in 1774. He went to improve the Electrophorus, which is a device that creates static electricity, in 1775. In 1776, he discovered and isolated methane gas. In 1779, he was appointed the the Chair of physics at the University of Pavia.

He was one of the greatest American scientists after Benjamin Franklin. He helped discover several of the important principals of electricity, like self-induction, which is a phenomenon of primary importance in electronic circuitry. He made important improvements in electromagnets, like using a wire instead of an iron core and increased the electric power. He even made an electromagnet at Yale College that could hold 2,063 pounds!
