  • Some women during the 1940's began to wear two pieces suits, they would mix-and-match as a new outfit for each day, even after the war.
  • Suit skirts were A line- they flared out gradually from the hip to knee
  • They took on a masculine militant look with the invention of shoulder pads that extended just past the edge of the shoulder
  • Their dresses had a boxy or square neckline and shoulder angle, sleeves were often puffed up a bit with gathers at the top and extended down to just above the elbow.
  • They did not show much cleavage much and if they did it was very, very little.

  • The pinstripe suit in navy or grey was the most iconic of the 1940s
  •  They wore formal suits that brightened up and had a velvet trimmed or white dinner jackets.
  •  During this time every man wore a felt Fedora or a straw hat and a snazzy pair of two toned shoes
  • With the men a pinstripe suit, fedora hat, and wingtip shoes were absolutely needed to look good

  • During this time pleated plaid skirt, snug fitting sweater over a blouse, white bobby socks and a pair of loafers or saddle shoes, were what the normal teenaged girl wore
  • The most worn piece of clothing was the ‘sloppy Joe’ sweater, it was a plain crew-neck or button up cardigan sweater that was worn a few sizes bigger than normal.

  • Boys(13-17) and young men(18-22) wore clothing that looked like younger versions of their fathers, at least to church and school. 
  • Knickers were a childhood fashion, if a teen was wearing knickers in high school it would be considered embarrassing for them
  • The normal teenage suits was made with single or double breasted styles. This was with a wide square shoulder and straight drape to thigh. They also had lapels that were wide with a notch or peak point. On them, the lapels had white handkerchief that were square and always folded neatly in in the breast pocket.
