Forced migration- Many of the evacuees were fleeing due to issues in their homeland. They were forced to leave because of either political or economic turmoil in their homelands. Majority of Portuguese settlers from Mozambique and Angola and white Zimbabweans emigrated to South Africa during the 1970s and 1980s.
Push migration- Similar to forced migration, hate crimes pushed the white South Africans out of their homes, causing a push migration.
Pull migration- Likewise, there was a specific pull factor coming from the Western countries, as it was a safe place to emigrate to.

Every migration flow generates a return or counter migration. Homecoming Revolution has estimated that around 340,000 white South Africans have returned to South Africa in the last decade, as of May of 2014. Therefore, yes, this law would be true as the travelers are coming back home.

2. The majority of migrants only go a short distance. In the case of the migration of white South Africans, they didn’t travel very far. In fact, Ravenstein would be correct because the emigrants migrated to the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. Traveling west, the white South Africans moved, in the grand scheme of things, a short distance.

3. If migrants move long distances, they go to big cities. Data shows that the people leaving South Africa did in fact go to big cities. At the time of the main migration period, New Zealand had been urban, more so then some of its neighboring counties. Hence why the emigrants chose to go there.

4. Urban residents are less migrating than rural residents. Once again, this could be true for this migration. It’s hard to judge solely because the reason for the mass move was high hate crimes. However, South Africa was not urbanized in 1990, so it does connect to the idea that urban residents are less migrating than rural residents. The white people leaving were living in a very rural area at the time.

5. Families are less likely to move internationally than young adults. Entire families, at this point in time, were forced to migrate. In 1994 Nelson Mandela became president, eradicating the white influence on government. This creating a government that wanted more lower skilled black employment then skilled white employment.
