One positive impact of automation on society is the safety of people in their workplaces, such as factories. Robots are more consistent than humans meaning they are not making mistakes. This means there will be less worker accidents. Also, robots can take the place of workers in hazardous areas of factories to eliminate the risk of workers getting injured etc.

One major negative impact of automation on society is the loss of jobs and worker displacement. With the abilities of automation systems and robots constantly improving, they will be skilled enough to do the tasks involved with many people's jobs. A recent study made by McKinsey & Company estimated that 50% of all current jobs could be automated by 2030.

Another positive impact is the overall reduction of cost for things such as goods and services. If there are no or few people used in the process of making a product, then the factory owner will have to pay less people. This means that the products cost less to make and therefore will cost less for the buyer. This is the same for services too. If a robot is doing the service instead of a human, the owner does not have to pay that person for their time. However, it will still cost money because it costs the owner money to run and maintain the robots and also, they are trying to make money. This will save people money in the long term.

Another impact of automation is the potential for robots to overrule humans rather than to serve for us. Instead of automated systems aiding humans, they could use us as their slaves. The possibility of this happening in the near future is unlikely. However, technology such as AI is increasingly getting as smart as humans. This means that unless everyone stops improving it, it will eventually become smarter than humans.

Universal Basic Income

When robots and automated systems are able to take over our jobs, the majority of society won’t be able to earn money that is needed to live in the long term. A solution to this is Universal Basic Income or UBI. The idea of UBI is when everyone over the age of 18 is given a guaranteed amount of money each month to cover the cost of living. As UBI is a recently introduced idea, it is not determined what it is or it should be. However one version of UBI is that each person is given just enough money to be above the poverty line. In the US, this is $1000 a month or $12,000 a year. Other versions of UBI include having it instead of a welfare system, having it alongside a welfare system and having the UBI payment so high that there is no need to work.

Fee and Dividend

Fee and dividend is an idea to give back people money and also contribute to fixing climate change. The way it works is taxing the companies selling fossil fuels. Starting off by taxing them by $15 a metric ton and slowly increasing the fee by $10 a metric ton every year. In order to make money, the companies will have to increase the cost of their products, making it more expensive for the buyer. This discourages people to buy these products and encourages them to look for environmentally friendly options that are cheaper. The money that has been collected from taxing the companies will be equally shared back to everyone each month. They can then use that money to make more environmentally friendly decisions like saving up for an electric car etc.
