The usage of Joy's question shows that she feels her 2 friends, Lisa and Vernie, had came all the way to Singapore to work as a domestic helper only to play and have fun. The question also comes with a very frustrated and somewhat envious tone. 
Through the question, Joy compared her hard work, time and effort while her 2 friends oddly seem to be enjoying their time. 
Joy also thinks that her 2 friends are not serious about their jobs - wearing their employer's clothes without permission and wearing heavy makeup - they spend their hard earned/their employers' money frolicking around in Singapore. 
To Joy, they were not dedicated and their employers' families were definitely not her 2 friends' priority. On the contrary, Joy knows she puts in a lot of effort into caring for her employer's family and works very hard.


The repetition of "Where is aunty Joy? Where is aunty Joy?" highlights that Joy puts in so much effort and thought into caring for the family to the point where the employer's daughter is only willing to eat her food in the presence of Joy. 
Through this, we can infer that Joy is very dear from the perspective of the employer's daughter - only willing to be vulnerable and eat when Joy is there to feed her. Joy does not simply work and do the housework to get over it, she manages to establish a relationship and bond with the members of the family. 
This emphasizes that she is a very dedicated caretaker and domestic helper for her employer's family.

The fact that she commented on Vernie's makeup emphasizes how she doesn't agree with Vernie's actions. In addition, buying makeup costs quite an amount of money, which Joy would rather send her hard earned money back to her family in the Philippines instead of keeping them for her own recreational and beauty use. After all, money was the reason she came here to work after all. She decided that putting in effort and working hard is best for her to survive and earn income, thus showing us the hardworking side of herself.

Secondly, the juxtaposition of the ideas of "work" and "party" when she asks her friends Lisa and Vernie "You come here to work or to party?" shows how in Joy's life, there is a clear line between work and leisure and the two should not be mixed. Her frustrated tone when she says that also indicates how she isn't pleased with what Lisa and Vernie are doing with their lives and money here. She puts work before everything available in Singapore and chooses to work hard and diligently unlike them, and makes the conscious effort to choose neither to party nor to even go to Lucky Plaza to eat as it is more expensive than cooking at home. Just reading this poem of someone suffering through things that we fear, it makes us sympathize with Joy.
Next, the poet uses gustatory imagery when talking about the lucky plaza food courts food. "the taste is not like home". This sentence makes us feel sympathy as we hate being homesick. If we were to travel to a new, foreign area, surely after a while we would crave food from our hometown. That is exactly what is happening here, there is no sense of familiarity for Joy in Singapore. We all have our favorite comfort foods, but to see Joy go through life without a sense of home, being stuck in a place so far from home, we would feel sympathy.

Exp 1: The visual imagery of Joy sitting at home, back aching and reading articles suggests that she stays at home so that she can save more money. By cooking her own food instead of eating out, staying home so that she would not waste money to party and does not wear make up so as to not waste her money. This is also supported with how she stays so that she can earn more money.

I cannot understand" This indicates that enjoying herself is not important to her as her job takes up so much of her energy. Unlike typical domestic helpers, Joy prefers to stay at home and rest instead, choosing to 'stay at home and try to read the articles in newspaper' as well as 'watch Chinese TV with the subtitles'. The diction of "cheaper", "too big" and "taste is not like home" shows her preference and the reasons for her choice of staying at home. This shows how she does not want to go to other places and enjoy on her off day, not allowing any distractions into her life and only focusing on her job in Singapore as a domestic helper. Thus, I think that Joy is committed to her work.
