He is sure that a tsunami would will come and has confidence so he survives because of that. “BeeBee and I are climbing the hill” In this phrase he shows self confidence about herself because he is sure about what  he is talking about and he is sure he is about to do the right thing.

Even though they are in a life-threatening situation they carry take Daren with them until he wakes up.

“He’s too big to carry” Bee-bee said 

“I’ll pull him behind me, like a wagon,”Kyle said.

After they escape from the hotel alive they think they are safe. Yet until Kyle remembers that there is a warning at the beach about tsunamis and what to do when an earthquake happens strikes. Kyle warns Daren but he doesn't listen to him so Kyle and Bee-bee go up the hill to avoid being hit by the tsunami and they hide behind a tree. When the tsunami strikes, they think they would will get hit by it and they are really scared but luckily the tsunami doesn't reach them because they were are way too high.

“Bee-bee and I ran on, not knowing what was ahead of us
and not caring. All I cared about was putting as much distance
as I could between us and the next giant wave.”Kyle said.

This theme is very important in the novel because Kyle and Beebee have to survive the giant waves. Kyle wants to survive to see his parents again: “I wanted to live! I wanted to survive the tsunami and find Mom and Dad and go back home to Kansas”.
Apart from the waves, Also they also have to survive some fires. Their hotel gets on fire burns  and Kyle saves Daren on his way out. He also saves himself, his sister and more people that are were there in their hotel. “Hang on to my shirt,” I said. I dropped her hand and pounded on the doors of the rooms we passed. “Fire!” I Shouted. “Leave the building! Fire!” Shouted desperately Kyle. “ “What are you going to do about Daren?” BeeBee asked“We’re going to take him with us.” Kyle said” It was  is difficult for Kyle and BeeBee to make decisions, some are dead, and Kyle wants to survive. They don´t know if whether to go up the mountain or stay on the beach with Daren. But finally Kyle And Beebee got go up the mountain and could survive.

“I grabbed the brass door handle, then jerked my hand back.The smell of blistered, charred skin joined the smell of smoke as the pain shot up my arm.”
Daren is also desperate when he goes out of the hotel and walks down to the beach. He says:
“After I watch the fire, I’ll go down to the ocean. Water
won’t burn, so the beach is the safest place to be.”-say Daren. When hHe says he won’t go uphill to save himself from the tsunami. He was   is so desperate that he thinks that it   going closer to the water is a good decision but he almost dies because of this.
