One way to do an evidence based assessment, is to provide each student with a book. I will ask each student to..
- Identify the front of the book.
- Point to the title.
- Tell their shoulder partner who the author is.
- Turn the page.
- Locate the page number.
- Take turns reading the first sentence of the book with their shoulder partner.
- Count how many words are in that sentence.

This worksheet is interactive, and fun for students! The goal is to take the words that are given, into a sentence. Students are given six or seven words, and a punctuation mark all scrambled up. It is their job to turn these random words into a sentence that makes sense. This instructional strategy will help students determine how to create a sentence, and what it needs.
