They don't drive anywhere, disconnect from all electronic devices, don't spend money or even change out of their pajamas in some instances. They might not be able to work on a homework assignment requiring technology over a weekend or attend extracurricular activities on Friday nights or Saturdays. So if a teacher assigns something on Friday and expects students to have it turned in on Monday, the religious Jewish student observing traditional Shabbat might be given their assignment to complete early or given a 1-day extension so it is fair for them to complete it.
