Clear Communication - Parent would receive teacher planning a week ahead to pre-teach some concepts at home. Parent was a teacher too - firm understanding of concept in home language. Child had more confidence and began to take part in more class discussions. 😃

I include a parent in filming TV news about multilingual learning in school to increase awareness of language diversity. The news is already on the padlet.

Every new pupil from a different country is making a presentation about his or her town and cultural treasures. Parents are also involved in this activity.

For language lessons I would send home any text or if possible translated copy of a book we are to study in class in order for the family to read and go through vocabulary together before we started the lessons in school. In this way I tried to include vocabulary development in their home language and in our school language. Colleen, NL

A few years ago one of our Italian parents taught people that were interested, mostly teachers, how to make an authentic Italian pizza and the dessert Tiramisu.

Our teachers also invite parents to class trips, which gives them a chance to get to know about our culture, nature, history etc.

We also have several fairs throughout the school year where all students can share parts of their national cuisine.

We are very proud of our local action whose goal was to improve the integration of citiziens of third countries into the local communitiy. The theme of the local action was the wealth of cultural diversity. We organized The International Festival of Traditional Sweets and many parents participated by making traditinal cookies or meals from their country and by representing their culture, history and language through traditional cuisine.

Also, we organized cultural - artistic events during which parents and students had the opportunity to teach each other traditional dances from different cultures.

Usually, when a new student from a different speaking area comes to our school , he/she and his/her parents prepare a lecture about his/her country as well as cultural similarities and differences.

Language Festival booths - traditional clothing, food, symbols, books, flag, traditional songs and short history. Bilingual recipe book made for parents. Children can sing universal songs (If you happy and you know it) in their different languages.

Activity ideas:
Parents teach playground games in their own language and teach the vocabulary. This works be a short activity as part of the festival. Game ideas include: rock, paper, scissors. Hopscotch, Jacks.....

Also, children and parents dress in their traditional clothing.

If there are language groups then an idea would be for the language group to come together with a parent to read together or sing together. This can be great for children to connect with others in the school and get to enjoy time together in their language.
