The Munich Agreement and the Partition of Czechoslovakia

Hitler threatened European War unless Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland, which included a large number of ethnic Germans, was handed over to Germany. In Munich, the capital of the state of Bavaria, the leaders of Germany, Italy, France, and the United Kingdom met. It was suggested at the meeting that in exchange for Hitler's peace, they would allow the annexation of Sudetenland. Great Britain and France pressed Czechoslovakia to hand over Sudetenland, which was not present at the meeting. Hitler betrayed the pact and invaded Czechoslovakia almost six months later. Slovakia joined Germany after breaking away from Czechoslovakia. Czechoslovakia no longer exists and has been replaced by the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Hitler's Non-Aggression Pact with Poland

In 1934, Hitler signed a non-aggression pact with Poland, which was one of his first acts after assuming office. This initiative was unpopular because Poland received numerous former German regions after WW1 as part of the Treaty of Versailles. This pact was designed by Hitler to prevent France and Poland from forming a military alliance against Germany.

Appeasement in Europe

France and the United Kingdom pursued an appeasement policy in order to avoid conflict with Germany. They obeyed Germany's requests to maintain appeasement. France and the United Kingdom did not believe they were militarily prepared to confront Nazi Germany. Germany urged that the Treaty of Versailles' constraints on the German army be lifted, the Rhineland be remilitarized, and Sudetenland and Austria be annexed. Almost all of their requests were met, but the Munich Agreement for the annexation of Sudetenland, which declared that Hitler would resolve any future crises peacefully, was not.

On September 1, 1939, Germany invaded Poland. Nazi propaganda accused Poland of persecuting ethnic Germans in Poland, and Poland was attempting to overthrow Germany with the help of France and the United Kingdom. They also staged a Pole-on-Germany attack and claimed their invasion was in reprisal for this. Germany annexed former Polish territory along its eastern border a month later. A Nazi Party lawyer was in charge of the rest of Poland. Poland was ruled by the Germans until 1945.
