Today, I had my first day of pre-sessional English class. Our English tutors name is Jamie Bower and he has been teaching for a decade now. In today’s class, we introduced ourselves. It was fun to know people around the world, as everyone has come from different cultures, traditions, languages and different types of accents while speaking. I was really happy to meet them all for the first time. We also had a chance to work in groups, it was fun and was interesting because I got to see how talented people are in their own work. It was a great experience to see their brilliantly done work.

In one session the tutor asked us to find out mistakes in sentences, I was little bit confused and got stuck. The questions were tricky. I struggled a bit over there. One new think I learnt in class 3 was using of Padlets. I found it to be an interesting software, it has lots of features.

We had one presentation this week, we presented in front of the class and our tutor. I was a bit nervous, as there were totally new people in front of me. But fortunately, I presented well and I got positive feedback from my tutor. I was quite happy with my first presentation in my class.

Prachi :)

This week Jamie taught us about "Art Activism". We had an assignment for homework which included 5 articles. There were 5 documents which included 5 different artists with their creations. The document had a paragraph with some questions. Our task was to research the topic and answer those questions. We had an option to select 2 of the favorite artists and compare their artwork.

So here are the two artists I selected :

1. El seed

He is a French - Tunisia calligraphy artist. His works are in Arabic through graffiti. Mainly his art is to protect the culture and history of the country or a place. He later wrote the book "Lost Walls".

Website: https://elseed-art.com/

2. Olafur Eliasson

He is a Icelandic-Danish artist well known for large installation. He created a "The Weather project". He created a small solar lamp which runs on solar energy. His main intention of this project was to save fuel and protect environment.

Website: https://olafureliasson.net/

Today I researched on all the 5 articles. I found EL Seed’s and Olafur Eliasson’s art were really different and interesting. Both the artists worked for improvement and stability. EL Seed had an intention of saving the history and culture, whereas, Olafur Eliasson wanted to make people’s lives easier by creating a "Little Sun Solar Lamp".

I found it really fascinating the way they thought of creating something to spread positive message around people.

This assignment was truly difficult as the topic was completely new for me. I spent ample of my time to research and then write the summary. I have never done this before, so it roughly took around 5 hours to complete the whole assignment. The outcome was fairly good, I will make improvements next time. However, I will need some time to learn and figure out more things about such activism artist.

Bibliographic references

El Seed (2023) Lost Walls. At: LOST WALLS-TUNISIA – EL SEED ART (elseed-art.com) (Accessed 24/07/2023).

Tate Modern (2012) Tate Modern blacks out for Olafur Eliasson’s Little Sun. At: Tate Modern blacks out for Olafur Eliasson’s Little Sun – Press Release | Tate (Accessed 24/07/2023).

:)

About Tania Bruguera

Tania Bruguera is an artist and activist who focuses on installation and performance art. She lives in Cambridge where she works as head of media and performance at Harvard University. Bruguera has participated in numerous international exhibitions. She is born on18th July 1968.

Tania Bruguera and her immersive/interactive art

Two policemen with their uniforms on are mounted on the horses and controlled by the audience at the exhibition. The police are giving directions where to move and in which directions to go or where to move. The audience does not have to know that it's an art, because Tania feels that if people know about it, then their behaviour will change and they won't respond naturally. In this project Tani Bruguera feels that the police should control the public in a natural way, that is the most important thing in her project. Additionally, she says people shouldn't know that it's an art because she feels people should enjoy this live event. She also thinks that audience should experience power.

I really feel it's an incredible idea to involve the audience in such a project. If the people aren't aware that's an art then they would react naturally instead of pretending something else. I have never heard about any of such art exist. I am finding interest now in knowing more about such activists. I will research more now as I'm getting interested in reading such stories of the activists.

Here are the links to the videos:

1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7L1s_GWn3o

2. https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/hyundai-commission-tania-bruguera

Bibliography

(2008) Tania Bruguera.

Guerrilla Girls

Since Jamie introduced us to the "Art Activism" many well- known activists have come across in our researches and we have included their names in our assignments. A very known group named "Guerrilla Girls" has done marvelous projects till date. They have been working for centuries. Guerrilla Girls were founded in the year 1984.

Their work remains influential and is still used as a tool in art museums around the world. They have been working on social and political issues mostly racism, sexism and art corruption. They have worked in different mediums such as exhibitions, posters, street projects etc.

The group of girls wears masks when in public for hiding their identity, to remain anonymous. (Guerrilla Girls, November 2023). Moreover, I think they tend to draw more attention from the public when they mask their identity.

Many people take part in their project, they allow people to write a compliment on a piece of paper and put them on the board. I think it's a positive aspect, as they are working for reducing discrimination in society.

Bibliography

Potash, J.S.

In today's lesson Hal told us about Bibliography and how to use it accurately. He played a song in the class today, named “Imagine” by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. It was such a beautiful song and outstanding lyrics. The song was full of positivity. I have heard the song before. I really feel motivated when I hear this song everytime. As an assignment Hal told us to write about the song. I really enjoyed today's lecture and I was happy to hear this song after a long time.

About the song

John Lennon wants us to imagine a place where people live for today and stop worrying about tomorrow. Imagine a world which is one, no caste, no religion, no country. Respect mankind, be a human and release all the fear, jealousy, and hate rate. Be in a the place where people bond to each other. He is hoping for a better place, where people live together with only one religion and that is humanity.

My thoughts

I think to make a better place there should be no borders, and religion. The place would be much better than it is now, where people will be happier and peaceful. People sharing one religion and that's humanity.

I truly believe that the singer has deep thoughts in his song. It's such an amazing song, which has all positive thoughts.
Mock-up Presentation "Activism"

Today we are going to have a mockup presentation for our main project "Activism". I did lots of research over this weekend, it was tough. I think researching is the most difficult part of this assignment.

I chose two artists for my assignments.

1. Reshma Valliappan

2. Jenny Holzer.

Reshma Valliappan works towards mental issues while Jenny Holzer works mostly for political issues. Both are working to bring about change in the society and for raise awareness. Reshma who is suffers from schizophrenia, has experienced how an illness can cause terrible in someone’s life. She believes painting can make a difference. It is easy to interact or communicate with people. In schizophrenia the person has lots of confusion and it's difficult for an individual to differentiate between the real world and the fairy world. She is working for people with mental issues to make their life happy.

On the other hand, Jenny wants to spread the message of hopes and motivation. All her texts are used in capital letters. I think it's really a great idea to use capital letters, because it draws more attention.

I personally found it to be really interesting. I am totally new to the subject, so can't say much about it. However, in the future I would like to do some work for the mental health affects children. As an artist myself I feel that painting and drawing makes lots of difference. It helps in releasing stress and a person is charged up and feels relaxed.

Okamoto, T.

Today, we learned about how to write a compare and contrast essay. I always find it interesting to write a compare and contrast essays. Jamie gave us a task of comparing two images. One will be a painting by “Edward Hopper” and second image will be our own creation. It can be an illustrated image, painting or a photograph. I chose to use a photo I took when I went on a trip with my family this year.

Task

The image on the top is Edward's painting and the one below is the photo I took. The first thing I noticed in both the pictures was the yellow light. Both of the pictures have yellow dim light. Edward's painting has wooden furniture inside the cafe, while the picture at the bottom has wooden chairs. In the top picture there are three patrons and one waiter sitting inside the cafe. However, in the image below, there are no people. I feel both the images have some element of green in them. The metal frame in the cafe is green, and elsewhere, in the picture below there are green bars. Both pictures mainly consist of colors like green, brown, and yellow. One more thing I noticed is that both of the images have a cozy, dim light and both places seem to be in a quiet location. Additionally, both the pictures have a night view.

Bibliography

Wikipedia. (2023). Nighthawks (Hopper).

In today's lesson, Hal told us about a video describing an art. We gave us a task to create a video showcasing any installation, sculpture, painting art in your country. Hal told us to describe that art and what negative or positive reactions arise after creating this art. I experienced vlogging in this assignment, it was fun. I have never vlogged in my life. I was really excited to record a voice and add it to the video. I really enjoyed doing this assignment and experienced new things.

Pune - Painting Walls

I have edited this video in InShot. I did not shoot the video myself, it was from YouTube. I edited this video and added my own voice to it.

I really loved the way the artist painted the illustrated pictures on the wall. I believe that people who are new to visiting Pune get an idea of the culture and history of Pune through his painting. This art is vibrant with lots of colors and figures. It prominently shows the traditions of Maharashtra. How people dress up, their style, their overall looks etc. It's really an amazing art to see as you enter the city, it gives you an idea of the history and people in Pune. I didn't record any reviews, but whatever I have heard till now from people is that people are simply loving it as they pass through this road. I didn't capture this video because it's really hard to video while driving. It's dangerous as well. Additionally, I have included my own voice in the background.

Updated on 28/11/2023

I reworked the video. The original audio was a bit loud, so my voiceover was getting suppressed because of that. Therefore, I decided to mute the audio from the original video with the help of an editing app and then added my voice to it.

Padlet wasn't allowing me to upload the video, as it's on the free version. Anyways, I have uploaded an image instead.

I have uploaded the video on teams.

Hope you all like it.

Thank you

Video Edited – InShot.

Voice – Prachi Bapat.

Source - Youtube.

Bibliography

(2003). Jamie showed us a few examples and we also saw a video. It was really useful to learn how to present your presentation in front of people. First, I have to thoroughly research the topic and then practice speaking and highlight main points (bullet points or keywords). Additionally, I have to create a PowerPoint presentation for my topic. The presentation file should include some text, images, Bibliography etc. While presenting I should take care of my pronunciation and speak slowly and take some pauses while talking. I also have to set a time and fit my presentation in the time slot given by Jamie.

Infographic Image :

The illustrated picture above is designed in Photoshop and Canva.

8 golden rules for presentation.

Use Bullet Points.

Use images to describe.

Set time and Balance volume.

Stay confident.

Ask questions.

Practice and research well.

Pronunciations.

Formal clothes.

List of Illustrations

Fig. 1.

How do Olafur Eliasson and El Seed try to change the world through their art works, and which one do you think is more effective?

Art can bring a new perspective to change the world. Nowadays, many artists are using art as a medium to work on social and political issues. This essay elaborates on two artists, Olafur Eliasson and eL Seed and their techniques to change the society.

The first artist, Olafur Eliasson invented "Little Sun", which works on solar energy.

Firstly, the little sunlight works on solar energy, it is the most affordable for any individual. Additionally, solar energy from the sun is renewable energy. (Eliasson, 2020). Secondly, the tiny lamp communicates feelings of empowerment when having a source in their hand, feels powerful (Eliasson, 2020). This shows that such creations can make a huge difference in people's lives.

The second artist, eL Seed is a graffiti artist, who wants to protect culture and history. eL Seed never learned to read or write Arabic when he was a youngster. Later in his life he started getting interest in Arabic language along with culture and history (Bengoechea, 2016). Furthermore, he started illustrating in Arabic graffiti art, his art bought people together by remembering their culture and history. (Bengoechea, 2016) Seed thought that art is a medium of communication. Certainly, his work would change the perspective of people around the world.

In conclusion, I believe eL Seed’s art is the most effective. Nowadays people are unaware of their own culture and history. It's very important to preserve history and culture of any place. Art can be magical in political and social issues; it can change the perception of the society and has power to change the vision.

(291 words)

Fig.1.

Dorothea Lange

Today, I was driving through the roads of California to Washington after completing my project of resettlement administration. I came across a pea pickers camp on my way home. I came to know that an early morning frost had killed their crops and 3000 works lost their job. It wasn't as easy as it looked. I was in dilemma to go home or stay back? I thought of capturing an iconic photo of the history. I captured 6 photographs but, it took me a while to get a perfect shot. I had to arrange too many things to get that perfect shot. Fortunately, I managed to get a perfect shot from a right angle.

Padlet Post

In today's lesson, Jamie showed us a video of a famous photographer Dorothea Lange. I actually loved the video, it was very interesting. I wanted to find out more about the photographer so after the classes I researched some information about the photographer. Apart from photographer’s background about her political work, I was totally fascinated about the dedication of the photographer. Despite of having a hectic day, she still stayed back to take photographs of the pea pickers camp. I learned from this that dedication and hard work always pay off.

I felt that even though she was tired after a long day, she stopped by the camp and took some photographs over there and hats off for her patience. I think the outcome of her work was amazing.

"Patience, Dedication and Handwork is a key to success."

Fig.1.

How does JR use art to create change and do you consider it effective?

Art has a lot of power to change the perception of society. Artists create art to bring positive change in the world. This essay will illustrate the famous french photographer JR, who uses art to raise awareness.

Art is the way to communicate with the audience and spread messages. JR is a photographer who creates big size photographic images. All of her works are black and white in color. Furthermore, he is a French street artist of one of the biggest global art projects, which is public art (Carole Cadwalladr Long Beach, no date). In California, JR launched his "Inside out" project a month back on TED2011"(Carole Cadwalladr Long Beach, no date). JR tells people to give a photocopy and he will create a huge billboards size photo and return. He requested people to glue the photograph on the walls, roofs, fence etc. JR was awarded $100,000 and one wish to change the world by TED for this creative project which was created. He announced a message " I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project and together we'll turn the world inside out"(Carole Cadwalladr Long Beach, no date). He has taken his work across the world like in Kenya, Paris, Brazil etc. He wants his work to spread all over the world.(Carole Cadwalladr Long Beach, no date). Community participation is very important in such projects which makes lots of difference. It's easier for people to understand when the artist is involved in the project.

In conclusion, art can bring a new perspective to change the world. Art acts as a medium to bring change in an individual's thinking, which ultimately changes the world.

(280 words)

List of images:

Fig.1.
Mock- Test - Presentation

Today we had a mockup presentation for our art activism project. I had created 9 slides. When I started my presentation, everything was ok initially. However, after sometime my teacher and classmates were able to hear my voice, but were not able to see the slides. I think it was because of the internet or maybe when we present on teams the slides become slow. I wasn't happy with that.

I still need to improve my slides and elaborate my art work more, so that everybody understands my perspective.

I was really happy to see that some of them really presented well and their slides were amazing and colorful.

Now I will work more on the art work I selected and improvise it.

:)
