         <description><![CDATA[<div>This blog discusses the various problems with cybercrime in public universities. Education focused on raising awareness and knowledge about unlawful Internet content and cybercrime among kids and teenagers, as well as parents and educators, is unquestionably the most effective method for such prevention.<br><br>Among all industries, cybercrimes were most prevalent in higher education surveyed in <a href="https://www.bitsighttech.com/blog/higher-education-infected-with-ransomware"><em>a </em><strong><em>2016 report published by BitSight</em></strong></a> (a cyber risk management company), and the second highest rate in <a href="https://www.bitsighttech.com/blog/ransomware-cyber-attacks"><strong><em>BitSight’s 2017 report</em></strong></a><strong><em>.</em></strong><strong> </strong>Over the past few decades, modern technology has been increasingly prevalent throughout the world's educational systems. Educational technology (EdTech), whether in the form of content delivery devices, online learning applications, cloud storage, learning management systems, computer-based assessment and training systems, or predictive learning analytics, has become fundamental to teaching and learning procedures <strong><em>(Ng </em></strong><a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23738871.2021.1973526"><strong><em>2015</em></strong></a><strong><em>).</em></strong> Colleges and universities do indeed hold a significant amount of sensitive data, such as student social security numbers and priceless intellectual property, that, if stolen or hacked, might create serious harm that extends far beyond the boundaries of the academy. Cyberattacks represent a serious risk to a university's reputation and the safety of its students, which may be even more important than the aforementioned possible financial losses. <strong><em>(Campbell, n.d.)</em></strong><br><br>In the face of cybercrime, public universities are taking measures to protect their students and employees. Public universities are constantly under attack from cybercriminals. They must take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of their data and students. To combat these threats, several public universities have taken a number of steps to reduce their exposure to cybercrime and improve their security posture.<br><br></div><div>A university is a firm that offers general public educational services and is made up of numerous colleges, departments, and programs. These institutions gather and keep private student and faculty information in their information systems. Because educational institutions have a duty to safeguard this data against compromise, they have put cybersecurity safeguards in place to stop cybercriminals from gaining unauthorized access to sensitive data. The defensive strategies employed by public higher education institutions to thwart cyberattacks and safeguard private information must also advance in line with these threats. Due to their extensive and public digital infrastructure, public institutions are frequently among the first targets of cybercrime. Additionally, these organizations have begun to keep an increasing amount of data online. As a result, they are vulnerable to the same kinds of assaults as other companies are.<br><br>Here in the Philippines, Philippines, just like its ASEAN neighbors, is continuously utilizing technology in almost every sector in its society and economy.&nbsp; The country has an estimated population of 103,775,002 as of 2012.&nbsp; An estimated 31.33% or 33,600,000 of its 2011 population use the Internet.&nbsp; As of 2011, an estimated 84.91% or 88,119,840 Filipinos are mobile phone subscribers while 25.77% or 26,752,000 have active social networking profiles. Of the Internet users in the country, 75% use personal computers while 25% use their mobile phones to access the Internet, whether for personal or business purposes. In universities across the country, both teachers and students are now bringing their own gadgets to class. New sophisticated gadgets, such as iPads and new Android phones, are released constantly with updated operating systems that are ripe for infection and prepared to attack the institution's network. For campus security professionals who have to secure a growing number of devices, this poses numerous security challenges.<br><br>Regardless of the protection an online service may offer, we should always be mindful of what we are doing since as modern technology has developed, many inevitable circumstances may arise if they are not adequately controlled.</div>]]></description>
