This is a full lesson plan on the Emilie Davis diaries, a free Black woman living in Philadelphia during the Civil War. It contains several primary sources to help students understand the perspective of a free Black woman on abolition, military service, and Black social life.

The presentation discusses the development and current progress of the (In)Visible Architects of Freedom: African Americans in Early Philadelphia Digital Archive. A collaboration between Independence National Historical Park and the Philadelphia School District's African American History Teacher Cohort, this project is designed with and for educators and students.

By shifting the focus from the stage to those who came to the March on Washington because they were participating in various local struggles around the country this lesson helps us find new meaning and relevance in a familiar story and uncovers a more complex and more relevant Civil Rights Movement.

This presentation argues that Black history is NOT anecdotal to the American canon; it is foundational. Not only do I highlight how Black history has been marginalized within dominant narratives, but I also highlight modern-day change agents and cultural historians who are preserving and circulating Black culture through alternative methodologies.

I am demonstrating how reclaiming Black memory confronts erasure, reshapes democratic understanding, and reasserts Black history as structurally central to America’s past, present, and future.

Futures Literacy is a skill to better understand the role of the future in what we see and do. My goal is to help us decolonize the future to empower us in the present moment.

It is my hope that you begin to understand Public speaking as a living practice of freedom—dynamic, responsive, and essential for enduring social change —not as mere performance, but as an ethical practice of truth-telling, resilience, and empowerment.

In the spirit of Blackprint 20: Education as the Practice of Freedom, this workshop invites educators to reclaim and reimagine Black education through the transformative lens of culturally relevant pedagogy. Grounded in the work of Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings and infused with restorative, equity-centered practice, this session explores how teaching that affirms identity, honors lived experience, and cultivates critical consciousness can ignite academic excellence and civic engagement among Black learners.

Participants will engage in interactive dialogue and reflective exercises that illuminate the power of culturally relevant teaching to disrupt deficit narratives and foster liberatory learning environments. We will examine how curriculum, instruction, and classroom culture can be restructured to center Black brilliance, resilience, and voice—moving beyond inclusion toward intentional empowerment.

This workshop will equip educators with practical strategies to:

• Design learning experiences that reflect students’ cultural knowledge and community assets

• Foster deep engagement through affirming, student-centered pedagogy

• Integrate civic advocacy and social justice into academic content

• Build classroom communities rooted in trust, relevance, and high expectations
