Cuticle- contains soft keratin. Scales that overlap make the hair waterproof & determines condition of hair.

Cortex- Contains hard keratin & melanin for colour. Determines thickness, elasticity & strength.

Medulla- contains hard keratin. Not always present in every hair, such as thinner hair. Also allows light to reflect off it, giving hair the shiny look.

Cuticle-It is the outer layer of the hairstructure, has a little pigment and hard keratin.

Cortex- It is the middle structure, produces pigment and has hard keratin.

Medulla- It is the inside structure, has soft keratin. Some hair does not have medulla. Has no pigment.
