Initially I believed that Twyla what white and Roberta was black. This was because of the fact that Twyla seemed to be educated since she knew how to read, unlike Roberta. But when reading forward I now believe that Twyla is black and Roberta is white because one, Roberta got into a wealthy family, which usually happens to those that are white and Roberta seems to always defend herself when it comes to the talk about racism.

in the beginning of the story she discusses how her mother "would stop dancing long enough to tell me something important and one of those things she said was that they never wash their hair and they smelled funny." This can relate to the racist stereotypes associated within the black community. She also says "It was something else to be stuck in a strange place with a girl from a whole other race."
